Lot 1618    

from N.S. Flag s. Constellation, C. Africa. Manuscript endorsement on incoming ship cover to Charlestown, Mass., entered the mails with "Savannah, Geo., Oct 2" cds and straight line "Ship" and "5" rate handstamps, Very Fine, as the flagship of the U.S. African Squadron from 1859 to 1861, she disrupted the African slave trade by interdicting three slave ships and releasing the imprisoned slaves.

Full Rigged Ship in Octagon. Clear red handstamp with matching "Phila, May 8" octagon postmark on 1834 folded letter to Long Island, N.Y., manuscript "14½" rate, with lengthy 2-page letter datelined Grand Bassa, Dec 24th, 1834 regarding expedition from Monrovia to Bassa (Africia); small tear at top affecting ship handstamp, F.-V.F.

List of Iron Steam Vessels, Built at the Burkenhead Iron Works. Printed copy of specification list and Copies & Extracts of Letters respecting the above Vessels addressed to Mr. John Laird with extracts from 1834-37, with original cover franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "Peoria, Ills., Aug 1, 1859" cds to Capt Thomas Baldwin in Northampton, Very Fine (no photo).
