NGL Line Steamship "Bremen", New York November 13th - Bremen November 25th 1872. Envelope posted a Jacksonville, Oregon on October 16th 1872 addressed to Copenhagen, Denmark. Prepaid the double weight closed mail rate via the North German Union of 2 x 10 cents using 1870, 10¢ brown, two singles (tear in right stamp). Reverse bears the "KOPENHAVEN Form 1? / 27 /11" arrival stamp. Atlantic Transit 12 days to Bremen, F.-V.F.

Fayette Springs, Pennsylvania to Switzerland, 1872. Via New York and Cunard packet to Queenstown, manuscript postmark and cancel on 1861, 10¢ dark green (average centering), stamp additionally tied by red New York / Paid All / British Transit cds, prepaid the 10 cents closed mail via Britain rate, Very Fine.

Lot 2779    

NGL Steamships "Koenig Wilhelm I" Final Voyage. Envelope posted at New York 12th November 1873, franked with 1873, 3¢ green, two singles prepaying the 6 cents via Bremen rate of October 1871. Addressed to Pofsneck, Thuringia bearing Bremen transfer stamp of 30th November and Pofsneck arrival stamp of 1st December on reverse; cover with a couple pin holes and edge wear at top left, otherwise Very Fine.
Scott No. 153    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The Koenig Wilhelm I of 2,250 tons was built in 1873 for NGL with her maiden voyage from Bremen on 25th June 1873. On her 2nd return crossing she was stranded on the Dutch coast at Nieuwediep on the 26th November 1873. 24 bags were taken off and transmitted to Bremen arriving there 30th November. Winter states that this is the only cover he has seen from the voyage.

St. Thomas (Danish West Indies, Now U.S. Virgin Islands), 1873 Folded Letter to New York, Prepaid by U.S. Stamp. 10¢ Banknote applied at St. Thomas and canceled at New York by that city's "N. York Steamship" cds, the stamp prepaid the steam packet rate between the United States and the West Indies, Very Fine and scarce; with 2004 P.F. certificate.

Boston to Ahmednugger, India via Southampton, 1872. Prepaid the 22 cent rate by 1870, 10¢ brown + 12¢ dull violet. Credit to Britain of "18" cents in red manuscript, handstamped 1d "colonial penny" credit to India for local delivery. Sea Post Office and Ahmednugger Camp postmarks on reverse; 10¢ with s.e. at left and 12¢ with corner crease at top left, F.-V.F.

HAPAG Line Steamship "Thuringia", New York June 17th - Hamburg July 1st 1874. One cent Postal Card from New York to Hamburg, Germany uprated to the 2 cent rate using a 1873, 1¢ ultramarine. On arrival at Hamburg that offices "HAMBURG / 23 / JUL 1 / 74 / 8¼ - 9" was struck. Atlantic Transit 14 days to Hamburg, Very Fine.

HAPAG Line Steamship "Holsatia", New York December 10th - Plymouth December 20th 1874. Envelope posted at New York addressed to Paris and endorsed "p Holsatia via Cherbourg" and prepaid a convenience 10 cents for the 9 cent rate to France effective August 1874. Franked with 1873, 3¢ green + 7¢ orange vermilion tied by NYFM cancels. Exchange office transit stamp of Cherbourg for December 21st 1874 struck on front. Atlantic Transit of 10 days; cover with a few filing pinholes and 3¢ with corner nick from cover overlap, otherwise Very Fine.

White Star Line "Baltic", New York November 21st - Queenstown 30th 1874. Wrapper backstamped "M. ECHEVERRIA & CO. NEW YORK NOV 21 1874" and put onto the Baltic leaving New York that day. Addressed to London and prepaid the 6 cents treaty rate of January 1870 using a 1870, 6¢ rose tied by full NYFM cancel. Atlantic Transit of 9 days, Very Fine.
