(Virginia City Pony Express) Wells, Fargo & Co./Virginia Cty, N.T. Blue oval handstamp tying Wells Fargo & Co., 1862-64, 10¢ brown right margin single (large margins to touching frameline at left) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank, entire with additional strike of Virginia Cty oval & addressed to San Francisco, endorsed "Pony" below adhesive, top right corner of entire torn off & replaced with what appears to be the original corner, top flap replaced, 1979 P.F. cert. makes no mention of the corner, but mentions "stamp, with internal faults", however we see no evidence of this under magnification, Very Fine appearance, ex-Kramer.

Lot 324    

(Virginia City Pony Express) Wells Fargo & Co./Gold Hill Utah (Nevada Territory Use). Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 4-1) ties Wells Fargo 1863 25¢ blue (margins cut in to clear) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank to Placerville, California, entire with light vertical creases at center & a bit soiled, small corner nick at upper right & slight edge wear, top backflap missing, Fine.
Scott No. 143L8    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The preponderance of westbound Virginia Pony covers are addressed to San Francisco, which is not surprising since the premium service was intended to provide expedited communication between San Francisco and the Comstock. This usage to Placerville is unusual and appealing since Placerville was the western terminus of the Overland Pony that preceded the Virginia Pony.

(Virginia City Pony Express) Wells Fargo & Co./Virginia City N.T. (Nevada Territory) Mar 16. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 12-3 with "Cty") struck twice with one strike tying Wells Fargo 1863 25¢ blue (four large margins including portion of next stamp at right) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank to San Francisco, "1863" docket, stain spots at upper left affecting the adhesive, small repair at top affecting the frank and top backflap missing, Very Fine appearance, ex-Myerson.

Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 12-3 with "Cty") struck twice on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank, S. Sinsheimer correspondence to San Francisco, "1864" docket in pencil, previously used Wells Fargo 1863 25¢ blue (Scott 143L8) added to replace Wells Fargo 1864 25¢ red (Scott 143L9) that would have been affixed originally (third stamp period March 1864 to March 1865), slightly reduced at right and minor edge wear at bottom left, Fine appearance.

Blue oval handstamp tying Wells Fargo & Co., 1862-64, 25¢ blue (large margins to just touched at left, bright fresh color) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank & additional strike of Aurora oval, addressed to San Francisco, bit of gum staining around adhesive, a tiny bit which affect stamp, Very Fine and choice, a lovely Virginia Pony from the Crittenden correspondence; with 1978 P.F. certificate.

Blue double circle handstamp tying Wells Fargo & Co., 1862-64, 25¢ blue (large margins including right margin, bright fresh color) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black Bamber ribbon company frank & Bamber magenta double circle handstamp, entire addressed to Virginia Ciy with manuscript "Pony" endorsement, reduced at left into frank, Very Fine; probably a unique usage.

A lovely conjunctive usage from Bamber, who operated in the East Bay, who carried the cover to San Francisco from transmission by Pony Express to Virginia City.
