(Incoming) Ten 1851-55 Incoming Stampless 6¢ Rate Covers (all envelopes) from eastern states to California, all showing the 6¢ transcontinental rate or the 12¢ double transcontinental rate (two) with handstamped "Paid" rate markings, all with clear or mostly clear postmarks, destinations include Columbia, Foster's Bar (one with printed address), Ophirville, and San Francisco, some minor wear, Very Fine lot.

Lot 62    

(Klamath) Sawyer's Bar, Cal. Manuscript postmark on cover to Massachusetts with spectacular franking consisting of ten 1857 1¢ blue, type V singles, all with light manuscript cancel, one stamp possibly replaced, Very Fine and rare, Cover illustrated in color in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 238), ex-Myerson.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Lot 63    

(Los Angeles) Los Angeles, Mexican "Hides & Tallow" Period. Stampless folded letter headed "Pueblo Dec 8th 1828" and written in English by John Temple, hand carried to Don Guillermo G. Dana at Santa Barbara, contents describe obtaining payments and trading in skins and hides on a recent trip to San Diego, Very Fine, a rare early California cover.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

In California under the Spanish regime, missions and ranchers depended chiefly on the sale of hides and tallow for a livelihood. The hide and tallow industry was in decline by the mid 1840's, a decline that was greatly accelerated by the discovery of gold in California in 1848.

John Temple opened the first general store at El Pueblo de los Angeles in 1827. William G. Dana first arrived at El Presidio de Santa Barbara in 1825. He changed his name along with his religion and citizenship when he married into a prominent local family in January of 1828.

(Los Angeles) Los Angeles, Cal./May 17 1853. Manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 6" rate on cover to New York, flap tear which extends slightly onto front, Very Fine, a very rare California manuscript postmark.

(Los Angeles) Los Angeles (Cal.). Manuscript postmark on buff cover to San Francisco franked with manuscript cancelled 1851 3¢ dull red (four margins), manuscript endorsement "Per Adams & Co. Express", which is crossed out & endorsed "Per Stmr. Fremont", the Steamer Fremont was an early California Coastal Steamer, Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

(Mariposa) Quartzburg, Cal. Large cds with "April 1" manuscript date on cover to Clinton, New York, franked with 1851 3¢ dull red block of four (diagonal crease & internal tear) with pen stroke cancels, tiny stain ties the stamps, Very Fine.

(Nevada) Centerville, Cal, Oct. 27th. Manuscript postmark and "10" manuscript rate marking on stampless cover to Saint Joseph, Missouri, "Peckham's Hotel" handstamped corner card or advertising marking struck twice, some edge wear & light stain along the bottom, Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Centreville Post Office was established in 1851 and renamed Grass Valley in 1852. The Peckham's handstamp is regarded by some to be a hotel forwarder's marking.

(Nevada) Grass Valley, Cal, Apr 6 (should probably be Jun 6) blue-green double circle postmark on 1862 British mail cover to England, franked with 1861 10¢ green three singles (all with s.e. at right) tied by additional strikes of the postmark, partial "New-York Am. Pkt., 3, Jun 28" red exchange cds, 3¢ credit for inland postage with similar red cds showing 6¢ credit stuck in error and overstruck by red grid, Liverpool red exchange cds (with year date), Horncastle Jul 12 receiving postmark on the back, Very Fine, a nice example of the 29¢ Pacific Coast rate to England 1¢ overpaid, ex-Myerson.

Lot 69    

(Plumas) Quincy, Cal., Jul 2. Balloon cds and "Paid 15¢" manuscript rate marking on 1863 stampless cross border cover to Peterboro, Canada West with red "Chicago Ill, Paid 15" exchange cds, Peterboro Jul 28 receiving postmark (with year date) on the back, Very Fine, a late example of the 15¢ Pacific Coast cross border rate paid in cash rather than by stamps.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Unlike other Pacific Coast foreign rates, the 15¢ Pacific Coast cross border rate continued to apply in the U.S. after uniform domestic postage (3¢ regardless of distance) went into effect on July 1, 1863. Uniform cross border postage (10¢ regardless of distance) was announced by the Post Office Department in an order dated February 17, 1864.

(Sacramento) Folsom City, Cal. Cds on cover to Ohio franked with 1857 10¢ green, type V (couple perf flaws) tied by 2nd strike of cds (lightly struck), cover with ornate corner card of "J.C. Hampton, Dotan's Bar California", part of flap torn away, Very Fine and unusual.
Estimate    $150 - 200.
