Lot 71    

(Sacramento) Michigan Bar, Cal., Aug 5. Cds struck twice with one strike tying 1851 1¢ blue type II irregular block of three (slightly cut in) on embossed lady's cover to Mokelumne Hill, small hidden cover tear in top left corner, Very Fine and attractive, a scarce California use of the 1¢ Imperf., Cover illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 301).
Estimate    $200 - 300.

(Sacramento) Mormon Island, March 30th, Cal. Manuscript postmark and "10" manuscript rate marking on stampless cover to Boston, minor edge soiling, Very Fine, ex-Myerson.

Lot 73    

(Sacramento) Mormon Island, Cala. Double-lined double oval postmark with "Dec'14" handstamped date and large "X" manuscript rate marking on cover to Maine, with original letter headed "Morman, Island Dec 12th 1854" with personal and religious content including "there is the least hypocrisy in California of any place I ever was in, every man acts out his own principal, the drunkard, the murderer, the gambler, the idolater, all this was carried on within a hundred rods of where I boarded…", light stain, Very Fine and a scarce example with handstamped date slug.

Lot 74    

(Sacramento) Mormon Island, Cala. Double-lined double oval postmark with "June 28" manuscript date and "10" manuscript rate marking on stampless cover to Milton, Massachusetts, then forwarded fully prepaid from Boston to South Mansfield, Massachusetts, "Paid" manuscript notation added at left & "Boston, Aug 2, 3cts" red cds and "Paid" red straight line handstamp applied at right, Very Fine and choice, a great strike of this marking which is notoriously difficult to find a complete marking, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 314).

(Sacramento) Mormon Island, Cala. Double-lined double oval postmark with manuscript date on five covers (four envelopes and one folded letter address leaf) showing different rates or rate markings including the 6¢ transcontinental rate paid by 1851 3¢ dull red two singles with pen cancels, manuscript "10" collect, handstamped "10" collect, handstamped "Paid" with manuscript "3" to San Francisco, and manuscript "Ford 5" collect on 1851 3¢ dull red cover from San Francisco to Mormon Island and forwarded nearly two months later to Sacramento, Very Fine lot.

(San Diego) San Diego, Cal./May 17,'52. Manuscript postmark on cover to New York with bold New York "Steamship/10" due arrival handstamp, flap tear & some slight edge wear, Very Fine, a rare early California postmark.

Lot 77    

(San Diego) San Diego, Mexican Period. Stampless folded letter headed "St Diego Alta California May 17/42/Barque Tasso" and "N Cruz Sept 2/42" and finally "St Diego Octo 1/42", letter written in English by the Captain of a Bark Tasso, operating between Mazatlan and San Diego with contents expressing gratitude for letters received, to Sandwich, Massachusetts, by the "Ship Alert", entered the mails with "Boston, Ms., May 5" red cds and "Ship" red straight line handstamp with "12" manuscript rate marking (2¢ ship fee plus 10¢ postage from Boston to Sandwich collect), some splitting at the folds & small edge tears, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Letter signed with directive, "Write to me Direct, Capt. Barque Tasso, Coast Alta California, Care of Don Frederico Becher, Matzalan, Send it to Cozzens in New York, get him to pay 25cts Postage and put it on board the Vera Cruz packet.".
