Double circle postmark with manuscript date (Whittlesey #1, R C) on 1853 folded cover to Indiana with two strikes of "5" in circle rate handstamp indicating 10¢ due rate, the letter is from a miner to back home with excellent content, I have got me a claim and a good one too, it's worth one thousand dollars in pure dust. It is thirteen miles southwest of Salem, the metropolis of the Territory, on the north fork of the Santeam River.…the earth is pregnated with gold, etc. mentions the plentiful salmon, Indians, plus much more, some minor edge discoloration, Very Fine and rare, this is only second recorded example of this rare postmark according to Whittlesey.Estimate $500 - 750.
