In red and blue (Dietz 11-19, verse 33) on cover postmarked rare Sweet Springs, Va., Aug 5 cds and "Paid/5" rate handstamp with both "5" in manuscript and a second strike of the Paid at lower right, addressed to Jacksons Ferry, Va., Very Fine and choice, a very scarce Patriotic Flag Design.

In blue (Dietz F13-1) on amber cover franked with a four margin 1862 10¢ milky blue "T-E-N" with a clear double transfer tied by neat blue "Richmond, Va./May 28, 1862" cds to Moffatts Creek, Va.; stamp with four margins & small tear at right, still Very Fine, a very rare usage of a "TEN" on a patriotic cover.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Confederacy, 13-Star "Excelsior" Flag Pro-Southern Patriotic Design. In red on cover to Philadelphia franked with manuscript cancelled 1857 3¢ dull red with matching "Lorentz Store/Feb. 15" (in what is now West Virginia) postmark, flap torn & worn corner at top left, tiny abrasion in design, Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This extremely rare design is illustrated in Wishnietzky book on Confederate patriotics, because the 13 stars in this flag is believed to represent Kentucky as the 13th Confederate State.

Confederacy, 13-Star "Jackson" Flag. In light blue (Dietz F13-4, verse 14) on cover franked with a pair of 1862 5¢ blue, local print pen-canceled with manuscript postmark "Buffalo Paper Mills, N.C., April 5t", boldly addressed to New Center P.O., S.C. in blue ink nearly identical to the color of the flag; stamps with gum stains, Very Fine, A unique combination of a rare design and a rare industry postmark.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.
