Hawaii, Lahainaluna, Sept. 22, 1836. Dateline on 3 page folded letter to Peacham, Vt., entered the U.S. mails with red "New London, Ct., Mar 28" cds, matching red Ship straight line handstamp and manuscript "20¾" rate (18¾¢ + 2¢ ship fee), forwarded to Pembroke, Vt. with manuscript "Peacham, Vt., May 2" postmark and rerated "(+)12½/33¼"; slight central cover splitting and light overall toning, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Hawaii, [Oahu] Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, Aug 16. Red cds (MH 243.03) on small cover to New Bedford, Mass., U.S. postage collect with "San Francisco, Cal., Sep 3, 1862" cds and matching straight line "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "12" rate in blue crayon, "Sep 27" receiving backstamp; cover slightly reduced at right and small internal cuts, F.-V.F., ex Tows.

Lot 1742    

Hawaii, San Francisco, Cal., Nov 3, 1862. Clear cds with matching "Ship 5" rate handstamp on privately carried cover from Honolulu to San Francisco, carried aboard the ship Young Hector departing Oct. 15 and arriving Nov. 1, manuscript "J.O. Dominis, Recd. Nov. 3d, 1862" docketing; cover with light staining at bottom edge of cover, Very Fine, an interesting cover from John Owens Dominis who was the secretary and chamberlain for King Kamehameha IV and recently had married Princess Liliuokalani on September 16, 1862.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The collect rate on inbound mail to San Francisco had been dropped from 6¢ to 5¢ early in 1862 to match the internal rate in California.

Hawaii, Too Late. Bold straight line handstamp (MH 765, Rarity 1RRRR) on 1897, 1¢ postal card to Koolauloa, matching "Honolulu, H.I., Jul 5, 1899" duplex postmark; minor card wrinkles, Extremely Fine, a choice example of this rare auxiliary marking, only two recorded usages of this marking are known, both used in 1897.

Lot 1744    

Hawaii, Waiakea, Hawaii, Oct 10, 1827. Dateline on lengthy 3 page folded letter from Mrs. N.W. Ruggles to Stafford, Ct., oval "Nantucket, Mass., 6 Mo. 6" Quaker date postmark and manuscript "Sh 20¾" rate, letter with interesting content including a narrow escape at Valparaiso, the charge of purchasing of native Hawaiian females by ship captain Daniel Buckle…The charge of female traffic is what wounds them most, that being a capital crime in England. The English consul here says he shall prosecute Capt B. when he arrives, also a notation of November 4th mentions experiencing an earthquake; letter wear and splitting at folds, Fine, a fascinating early Hawaiian letter.

Hawaii, Waimea Hawaii, Sept 1, 1848. Dateline on lengthy 3 page letter to Colrain, Mass., entered the U.S. mails with red "New London, Ct., Apr 2" cds, matching straight line "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "7" rate, letter with interesting content from Rev. Lorenzo Lyons regarding consumption and other diseases on the island…deaths from various diseases are quite numerous…of the 6,000 whom I have received in the church 2,000 have died, etc.; faint edge toning, Very Fine.
