Lot 204    

Everts & Co.'s Express/Forbestown. Blue oval handstamp with "Connecting With Adams & Co." with "Adams" excised (late use by Everts, Davis & Co. after Adams had failed in 1855) on 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Sacramento, exchanged with "Pacific Express Co. / Marysville Jan 29" blue oval handstamp, "1856" docket, hint of edge wear, part of top backflap missing, F.-V.F., a scarce conjunctive use, with original letter headed "New York Flat Jan 26th /56" from the "Clerk of an Independent Rifle Company at this place" seeking to ascertain the status of a requisition for arms.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

New York Flat was a mining camp in Yuba County. This cover is addressed to the Hon. W. C. Burnett who, at the time, was a California State Senator representing Yuba and Sutter Counties. He was also the First Lieutenant (second in command) of the Yuba Guards. The Yuba Guards, Fifth Division, First Brigade of the California Militia was active 1855-1857. The California Militia was organized in 1850 to fight lawlessness and deal with Indian hostilities. The California Militia became the California National Guard in 1866.

Everts, Davis & Co.'s Express/St. Louis. Large blue green oval handstamp on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire with printed frank "Paid Everts, Hannon, Wilson & Co. Daily Express", carried by Everts to Marysville & transferred to Wells, Fargo & Co. with their blue oval handstamp, addressed to "Noisy Carrier Hall", slightly reduced at left just affecting printed frank, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Everts Snell & Co.'s/ Express/Feather River. Blue double-lined oval handstamp on incoming 1852 cover to Marysville, postmarked "Albion, Mich, Jun 7" origin cds and "V" changed to "X" handstamped rate marking, delivered collect in the mines with "Brj" (?) and "1.25" pencil express rate, letter datelined June 5, 1852, from a wife to her husband accompanies, Very Fine and choice.

Everts, Wilson & Co.'s Express./La Porte. Circular handstamp on 1861 3¢ pink entire with "Langton's Pioneer Express/Paid" company frank in black at top left, addressed to Carson City struck with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co./Marysville" oval, flap torn, Very Fine and choice, a very rare conjunctive usage, ex-Barkhausen.
Estimate    $400 - 600.
