Name-of-Boat Cachet "Atlantic". Large part folded letter from Baltimore to London May 30 1820, prepaid 18½ cents to New York, red oval "Ship Atlantic Sailed / June 4 / W. Matlock" Carried to Liverpool where the step-type Liverpool / Ship Letter was struck and the rate of 1/7d. charged, being 8d. ship letter plus 11d. inland postage to London, Very Fine and choice.

Lot 2568    

Paris - New York - Troy - Hoosick of 1823. Entire dated "Paris February 10th 1823" addressed to Troy and redirected to Hoosick. Arrived New York 5th April and charged "20½" Cents being 18½ Cents for over 150 miles of the 1816 rate plus 2 Cents ship letter fee. At Troy charge increased by a further 6 Cents for the 24 miles to Hoosick. Atlantic transit of 51 days, Extremely Fine.

Lot 2569    

1824 Per Pkt Ship Montezuma - Captn Thos. Potts. Incorrect endorsement (the Montezuma was not a packet but a private vessel which could only carry ship letters. Originating at New Castle upon Tyne, this letter was carried to Philadelphia where the red 6 in circle was applied, being the ship letter rate for letters delivered within port of arrival, Very Fine.

(Name of Boat) PACKET SHIP ATLANTIC/ABRAHAM BELL & CO. OWNERS/NO 33 PINE ST. NEW YORK. Belfast - New York - Lynchburg of 1821, Entire dated "Belfast 1st September 1821" addressed to Lynchburg, Virginia. Arrived New York 12th October and charged "27" Cents being 25 Cents inland for over 500 miles plus 2 Cents ship letter. The inland fee seems to be an overcharge of 5 cents, the distance New York to Lynchburg via Washington and Richmond was 450 miles by post road. Atlantic transit of 39 days., Extremely Fine, a gorgeous example of this rare marking.

(Name of Boat) PACKET SHIP JOSEPHINE/ABRAHAM BELL & CO. OWNERS/NO 33 PINE ST. NEW YORK. Entire dated "Stewardstown 15th March 1832" and put onto the Josephine at Belfast. Addressed to Mishler, Pennsylvania with transfer at New York on the 25th May. Charged "20?" cents being 18? cents under 400 miles inland plus 2 cents ship letter fee., Extremely Fine and choice, a stunning cover.

Lot 2572    

1828 Sailing Packet Fabius 1828, the Previously Unrecorded Name of Boat Cachet. Struck in red by Abraham Bell & Co. on reverse of folded letter from Ireland to Pattonsburg, Virginia. The Bell cachets have long been known for the sailing ships Atlantic, Courier, Josephine, and Robert Fulton, but this cachet for the Fabius has never before been reported. Handed in at New York and rated 20? cents, being 2 cent ship letter fee plus 18? cents inland postage to Virginia, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Interestingly, an additional 10 cents forwarding postage has been added to the amount due, although there is no other evidence of forwarding.

Bold Red QUARANTINE Handstamp on Incoming Ship Letter to Boston. Folded letter datelined Havana June 22. 1831 and carried to Boston on the private ship Minos, quarantined at the lazaretto on Rainsford Island (variously known as Hospital Island, Pest House Island, and Quarantine Island) due to an outbreak of yellow fever in Havana. Released to the Post Office on 9 July. Red Boston "SHIP/6" in arc, Very Fine and choice.

Havana - Hamburg - New York - Portsmouth of 1834. Entire dated "Havana 28 July 1834" mistakenly put on a vessel to Hamburg. Quarantined at Cuxhaven explained by letters content stating "yellow fever or some other sickness nearly as bad" causing death or crewmen. Received the "CUXHAVENER QUARANTAINE SIEGE / DR A.C.T. MEIER" cachet. Landed at Hamburg 4th October to be sent on to New York arriving 13th December 1834. Charged 20? Cents on delivery. Atlantic transit of 68 days., Very Fine and choice.

Lot 2575    

Havana to Germany via Isle of Wight Consular Forwarder and Hamburg Post Office for America, 1832. Letter (in German) datelined Havana August 10 1832, landed at Cowes, Isle of Wight, where the U.S. Consul, Robert R. Hunter applied his forwarder's cachet and sent the letter as a ship letter to Hamburg, where the scarce "POST OFFICE for AMERICA / HAMBURG" with castle was struck, along with the October 13 arrival date .The total charge upon delivery was 12½ silbergroschen, being 2½ silbergroschen ship letter charge and 10sgr for the 500 kilometers to Herrnhut, now on the borders of both Poland and the Czech Republic, Extremely Fine.

New York to London via Independent Plymouth Sailing Packet, 1834. Lengthy folded letter originating in Gardiner, Maine, prepaid 18? cents to New York, endorsed "To be forwarded by the packet of the 1st Decr pr N. York" and put onto the Cosmopolitan as a ship letter, which entered the post at Plymouth charged 1/7d. for 8d. ship letter plus 11d inland postage to London, Very Fine.
