Ocean Line Steamship "Hermann", New York August 20th - Bremen September 6th 1850. Entire dated "Syracuse 15 Sept. 1850" addressed to Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg, Germany. The Syracuse office applied a "29" cent charge stamp being 5 cents inland plus 24 cents treaty rate to Württemberg via Bremen of March 1848. The Bremen exchange office applied the rate "12¼" Groschen rate stamp (Van der Linden 3143) for the 29 cent charge and the "AMERICA / UBER BREMEN" (Van der Linden 115). Atlantic Transit of 17 days to Bremen, Very Fine.

Lot 2678    

New Orleans - Boston - Liverpool - Paris 1850. Folded letter prepaid the 21 cents treaty rate for carriage by American packet, intended for the sailing of the Collins Line's steamer Baltic, but the New Orleans postmaster, realizing that the letter had missed that sailing, sent it directly to Boston for the sailing of Cunard's Niagara. At Boston, New Orleans was credited back "16" cents - one of only three covers known with such a backcredit. Very Fine.

Collins Line Steamship "Baltic" Maiden Voyage, New York - Liverpool November 16th - 28th 1850. Envelope and entire cross written sheet headed "Saturday Nov." to Liverpool with "AMERICA / LIVERPOOL" arrival of November 28th on reverse. Atlantic transit of 12 days, Very Fine.

Lot 2680    

Collins Line Steamship Baltic Maiden Voyage. Entire dated "Chicago 20 Ocktober 1850" and posted PAID on the 24th addressed to Bouzenville in the Mosse, France. Arrived New York too late for the 7th November so was held over for the Baltic. Paid the 21 cents treaty rate of July 1849 with "21" in manuscript for carriage by American packet via Britain. Arrived Liverpool 28th November, reverse bears London transit of 29th where the "COLONIES / &c. ART 13" stamp was applied. Reverse also bears the Bouzenville arrival stamp for 1st December 1850; light tone spots, F.-V.F.

Lot 2681    

Collins Line Maiden Voyage "Arctic", New York - Liverpool 27th October - 7th November 1850. Wrapper file noted "New York 26 Oct 1850" addressed to London and endorsed "Arctic". Received the "NEW YORK / 21 / OCT / 26" departure stamp giving 21 Cents credit to the US. On arrival at Liverpool the manuscript "1" for the 1 Shilling packet rate was applied. Reverse bears London arrival stamp for 7th November. Atlantic transit of 11 days, Very Fine.

The "Arctic", one of four sister vessels of 2,856 gross tons was built by William H. Brown of New York for Collins. Lost in collision on 20th September 1854 with over 300 lives lost.

Lot 2682    

Mails Between California and Britain At the 29 Cent Rate. On 1st July 1851 the rates for mails to Britain from the West Coast via New York were reduced from 59 cents (2 Shillings 5½ Pence) to 29 cents (1 Shilling 2½ Pence). Entire dated "Barque "Duchess of Clarence" San Francisco July 14th 1852" unpaid and bagged for Britain. Rated in manuscript on arrival at Liverpool at "1/2½". Reverse of cover showing the Liverpool arrival stamp of August 29th 1852, the ART-5 / B.R. PKT and transit stamps of Wakefield and Northalerton with Stokesly arrival, all of the 30th August., Very Fine.

Carried on the following route and vessels:-

San Francisco 15th July 1852 to Panama 2nd August on the S.S. Northerner (Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co.).
Chargres 4th August to Charleston 11th August on S.S. Southerner. (New York and Charleston Steam Ship Line).
New York 18th August to Liverpool 29th August on S.S. Niagara. (British & North American Royal Mail Steam Ship Company).
The Treaty specified the rate under Article 5 of the treaty and handstamps were applied at Liverpool stating "ART-5 / B.R. PKT." and "ART-5 / U.S. PKT."

Havre Line "Steamer Franklin" Cachet, New York 15th November - Havre 28th November 1851. Entire dated "New York 14 Novbr 1851" to Cognac and endorsed "Franklin" with rare blue oval "New York and Havre Steamer Franklin Steam Navigation Company" handstamp, Treated by France as prepaid to Havre and charged 6 Decimes to Cognac. Atlantic transit of 12 days, Very Fine.

The "Franklin" being the only Atlantic steamer to have used a Name-of-Boat cachet.

Lot 2684    

Cunard Line "Canada". Entire dated "New York 12th Oct. 1852" addressed to Cognac and struck with the New York short lived "BRITISH PACKET" (Winter records usage August 1852 to April 1853). Bagged for Boston and put onto the Canada on the 13th October arriving Liverpool 24th. Backstamped with London transit for 25th, Paris for 26th and Cognac arrival of 27th October and charged 13 Decimes; file folds, Very Fine.

The Canada of 1,831 tons was built in 1848 as one of four steamships laid down to allow Cunard to fulfill an increased schedule of sailings for their new contract.

Lot 2685    

Havre Line?s "Arago" & "Humboldt". Two covers; "Humboldt", Envelope forwarded by John Munroe & Co. in Paris and put onto the Humboldt at Havre on 31st August 1853. Addressed to New York where the Humboldt arrived on the 14th September. The charge of "24" applied at New York does not conform to the treaty rate for direct mail on an American packet of 20 cents (1851 - 1857).

"Argo", Envelope forwarded by Sumner, Morant & Draper of Paris who, initially struck the "Per Steamer / From Liverpool". Manuscript altered to "Argo" and "Havre" and forwarded through Draper & Hagenow at Havre (unlisted by Rowe). Put onto the Argo on 4th June 1856 arriving at New York on 17th June to receive the 20 cent American Packet charge stamp., Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Although the forwarding agent John Munroe & Co. of Paris is listed in Rowe together with the "Par Steamer / Pr. les États - Unis" mark, that for Sumner, Montant & Draper of Paris and their "Per Steamer / From Liverpool" is unlisted.

Havre Line?s "Nashville" Second & Final Voyage. Two covers;
Final Outbound Voyage, New York March 14th - Havre March 28th 1854, Entire posted at New Philadelphia, Ohio on March 1st addressed to Herrenberg, Konigs Württemberg, Germany endorsed "New York - Havre". Prepaid 20 cents (PAID / 20) annotated by the New Philadelphia office as being 14 + 6 cents. The rate to Württemberg via Bremen was 20 cents and as no treaty rate existed via France this seems to have been chosen. "NEW YORK AM PACKET / MAR / 14" applied and "OUTRE MER LE HAVRE / 28 / MAR" on landing at Havre. Reverse bears the Herrenberg arrival stamp of March 31st. Atlantic Transit of 14 days to Havre New York & Havre Steam Navigation Company.

Final Return Voyage, Havre April 12th - New York April 28th 1854, Entire dated "Paris 11th April 1854" and headed "Nashville 12th" and addressed to Philadelphia endorsed "p S.S. Nashville ara Havre April 12" and prepaid 60 Decimes by France 1853, 10c bister + 25c blue, pair (10¢ with nick and crease). On arrival at New York the rarer "20 N. YORK AM PKT / APR 28" (Winter 9) was applied Atlantic Transit 16 days from Havre, Very Fine.

In 1854 the Havre Line chartered the "Nashville" from Spofford, Tileston & Co. of New York for two round trips. She replaced the Humboldt which was wrecked near Halifax in late November 1853.
