Lot 2687    

Cunard Line "Andes" Only Transatlantic Voyage. San Francisco - Boston - Liverpool, Entire dated "16th/2nd 1854" from San Francisco from a stranded Capt. Henry Blyth who had lost his vessel the "Warrenton" and was stranded with his family in San Francisco. Reverse bears "AMERICA LIVERPOOL" green arrival stamp for March 19th 1854 and the "ART-5 B.R. PKT" stamp for the treaty rate related to letters from the west coast of the USA. Charged 1s.2½d. in compliance with the treaty; file fold, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The "Andes" was the first iron hulled propeller driven steamship constructed for Cunard. Not intended for the transatlantic service, she made only one trip to Boston leaving Liverpool 14th February 1854. She returned to Liverpool on the 29th March after which she was taken to the Crimea as a hospital ship.

Cunard Line "Andes" Only Transatlantic Voyage. Boston - Liverpool, Entire in the form of an order for 100 pairs of lace curtains dated 10th March 1854. Reverse bears the "AMERICA LIVERPOOL" green arrival stamp for March 19th 1854 and the Boston British Packet departure for 15th March. Charged 5 cents US postage and 1s. packet rate on arrival., Very Fine.

Fritz Line Steamship "Hansa" (Third Voyage) New York - Southampton - Bremen 25th August - 8th - 10th September 1854. Entire dated "Lancaster 22nd August 1854" addressed unpaid to Baden. Stamped "NEW YORK BREM. PK / 5 / AUG / 24" manuscript rated "22" cents being the treaty rate to Baden introduced August 1853. On arrival at Bremen the scarce "24/29 Kr.R AMERICA UBER BREMEN" was struck being 24 Kreuzer packet rate plus 9 Kreuzer inland resulting in the manuscript "33" in blue. Atlantic transit of 15 days; few minor tone spots, otherwise Very Fine, few cover are known carried by Fritz & Lehmkul.

Havre Line Steamship "Nashville" Maiden Voyage, New York January 16th - Southampton February 28th 1854. Entire dated "New York 10th January 1854" addressed to Balingen in Württemberg endorsed "per Havre". departure stamp "23 N. YORK AM PKT / JAN / 14" but held until the 16th for the Nashville sailing. Reverse bears the "AACHEN / 3 2" exchange office stamp. No rate via France was set at this date but the US post office required a 23 Cent credit from France. Atlantic Transit of 12 days to Havre, Very Fine, The Nashville undertook only two trips under contract to the Havre Line.

Lot 2691    

Mails between California and Britain at the 1851 Treaty Rate. Envelope piece endorsed "S. Francisco Sep 20. 1855" addressed to Brighton. Carried in the closed bag and on a U.S. contract vessel to Liverpool; portion of reverse opened for display, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

On 1st July 1851 the rates for mails to Britain from the West Coast via New York were reduced from 59 cents (2 Shillings 5½ Pence) to 29 cents (1 Shilling 2½ Pence). The Treaty provided the United States with an additional 5 cent (2½d Sterling) for the inland postage over and above the 24 cent (1/-Sterling) for the packet rate. A 1/2½ handstamp was issued to Liverpool in February for the California mails.

Carried on the following route and vessels:-
San Francisco 20th September 1855 to Panama 4th October on the S.S. Sonora (Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co.).
Aspinwall 6th October to New York 16th October on S.S. Empire City (United States Mail Steamship Company).
New York 17th October to Liverpool 28th October on S.S. Pacific (Collins Line) [New York & Liverpool United States Mail Steamship Company].

Lot 2692    

Collins Line Steamship "Atlantic", Hong Kong - Marseilles - Liverpool - New York. Envelope with content dated "Hong Kong May 25. 1856" but back stamped Hong Kong departure of March 14th 1856. A 43 cent charge was applied at New York with 22 cents to Britain for the Hong Kong to Marseilles P & O transit and French overland. Atlantic transit of 11 days, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The "Atlantic" departed Liverpool on April 30th arriving in New York on May 13th 1856.

Apportionment of rates:-
British rate Hong Kong - London 16 cents
French Transit Marseilles - Calais 10 cents
Transatlantic by American Packet 16 cents

Ocean Line "Washington", New York - Southampton 4th - 18th October 1856. Entire dated "San Francisco 4 September 1856" and sent overland to New York to be put onto the "Washington" on the 4th October. Prepaid 26 Cents being 5 Cents inland plus 21 Cents to Belgium. Reverse bears London transit for 18th October, Angleterre Par Ambt. Ouest of 19th and Antwerp arrival of same day. Atlantic transit of 16 days, Very Fine.

Havre Line Steamship "Fulton" Maiden Voyage, New York February 9th - Southampton February 24th 1856. Circular dated "Nouvelle Orleans 1 Feverier 1856" posted on the 3rd routed by closed bag through Calais on February 25th. Prepaid the 2 cent printed paper rate using 1851, 1¢ blue, type II, horizontal pair. Reverse bears Augsburg Banhof arrival stamp for February 27th. Atlantic Transit 15 days to Southampton; few cover tone spots at right edge, Very Fine.

Paris to San Francisco 1856, Prepaid via Southampton and St. Thomas to Colon. Carried from Panama to San Francisco by the PMSS steamer Golden Age, for which the recipient was assessed the charge of 20 cents. Strong markings and a scarce routing, Very Fine.

HAPAG Line Inaugural Voyage by the "Borussia", Hamburg 1st June - New York 17th June 1856. Entire dated "Hamburg d: 26 May 1856" and headed "P Borussia" addressed to Robinson Township, Ohio. Sent under separate cover by Henry Klefeker of Hamburg to New York on the Borussia and put into the post to Ohio at the 3 cent inland rate, franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red. Atlantic Transit of 17 days, This was a non contract voyage; some archival tape reinforcement on inside, F.-V.F.
