HAPAG Line Steamship "Hammonia II", Maiden Return Voyage, New York March 30th - Hamburg April 11th 1867. Envelope posted at Herman, Missouri March 26th 1867 addressed to Britnau, Switzerland 2 miles south of Zofingen and endorsed "Bremen or Hamburg mail" Prepaid the 19 cent treaty rate via Bremen or Hamburg of October 1860. Prepaid using 1861, 10¢ yellow green + 1863, 2¢ black, pair + 5¢ brown. On arrival at Hamburg the Stadtpostamt "franco" was applied. Reverse bears Zofingen arrival of April 13th and Britnau of the 14th. Atlantic Transit 12 days to Hamburg; cover tears with repair in lower left corner and partial bottomflap, Fine.

Lot 2750    

New York & Bremen Steamship Company, Baltic, New York - Southampton April 20th - May 4th 1867. Envelope to Malaga, Spain carried on the Baltic from New York on April 20th with London transit of May 4th 1867 and Malaga arrival of May 8th on reverse. The rate to Spain via Britain by American Packet was 21 cents between October 1858 and February 1867. The letter was correctly franked using 1861, 1¢ blue + 10¢ green, vertical pair (rough perfs at right). For an unknown reason the "PAID-ONLY / TO ENGLAND" was applied and the letter charged 8 Reales applied at the Spanish exchange office. The Line was short lived operating from February to December 1867 with four steamships undertaking 17 round trips. Atlantic Transit of 14 days, Very Fine.

Inman Line "City of Antwerp", Queenstown October 24th - New York November 4th 1867. Part entire posted at London October 23rd 1867 addressed to New York and endorsed "per Str. Via Queenstown". Prepaid at the quadruple rate for up to 2 Ounces of 4 Shillings using G.B. 1867, 2sh dull blue, pair tied by barred oval cancels. Atlantic Transit 11 days, Very Fine. SG No. 118.

Chicago Exchange Office: Allan Line Steamship "Austrian", Maiden Outward Voyage. Liverpool June 6th - Quebec June 18th 1867, Envelope posted at Newton Stewart, Scotland June 4th and prepaid the treaty rate of 1 Shilling using a G.B. 1867, 1sh green (small tear at bottom) and addressed to McHenry, Illinois. Struck at Liverpool with the "21 / CENTS" credit to the United States and routed overland from Quebec to Chicago to receive that exchange offices rare "CHICAGO ILL PAID 24/JUN/20" stamp. Atlantic Transit 12 days., F.-V.F. SG No. 117.

French Line "Napoleon III", New York July 15th - Havre July 24th 1867. Envelope addressed to Paris posted at New York July 12th and handed to the French exchange office the following day. Prepaid the 15 cents with 1861-63, 5¢ brown + 10¢ green. Atlantic Transit of 12 days; 5¢ with s.e. and guide mark at right, Very Fine.

NGL Line Steamship "Hermann", New York January 2nd - Southampton January 12th 1868. Envelope posted at Clifton, Illinois on December 30th 1868 addressed to Orsiere, Switzerland. Prepaid the 21 cent rate via France of April 1857 with 1861, 1¢ blue + 10¢ green, horizontal pair (nibbed perf at left) cancelled unusually in green by the Clifton grid. Reverse bears an indistinct Swiss TPO and an Orsiere arrival stamp of January 16th. Atlantic Transit of 10 days, Very Fine.

Lot 2757    

French Line "Péreire". Two covers carried by the "Péreire", both franked with 1861-66, 15¢ Lincoln;

First is part entire franked with pair (#77, light toning around) posted at New Orleans 14th March 1868 and prepaid to Havre, France the double weight for over ¼ ounce of 30 cents by French packet. The Péreire left New York on the 21st March arriving at Havre on the 1st April. Redirected to Rebeauville, Haut Rhine via Paris and Strasbourg (backstamps of 2nd April arriving Rebeauville 3rd April).

Second is envelope single franked (#98, light crease) and letter sheet dated "28th October 1868 Home" and posted at Philadelphia the following day. Prepaid the 15 cent rate for under ¼ ounce by French packet. Put onto the Péreire at New York on 30th October and landed at Havre on 9th November. Addressed to Drexel Harjes & Co. in Paris and forwarded under separate cover to Milan., F.-V.F.; 15¢ single on cover with 2003 P.F. certificate.

Philadelphia 1868 to Caibarien (a small village in Cuba). Franked with 1867, 10¢ yellow green, E grill (perf faults at bottom), sander's cachet and very fine complete blue oval "N.A.1" (Nave Americano or American Steamship,applied to incoming U.S. packet mail), Very Fine.
