(St. Augustine/29 Jany 1836). Manuscript dateline on folded letter to Cohoes, N.Y., entered the mails with red "Charleston, S.C., Feb 1" cds, matching straight line "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "27" rate, lengthy 3-page letter with a fascinating account of the Dade massacre and the effect it was having on St. Augustine…The slaughter of 109 U.S. troops on the Withlachuhy was a most shocking affair and cast a gloom over all that amounted to absolute fear in many cases and if there had been any means of conveyance within reach, all or nearly all the strangers in the city would have leftThis morning the steam boat Santee arrived with volunteers from Charleston, 50 in number and 2 pieces of artillery. They are distined for the defence of this city.Gen. Clinch is entirely on the defensive, having only 107 effective men, and in the very center of the indian territory. We have been much distressed on his account, fearing they might attack him with their combined force and cut up the whole force which now keeps them at bay., etc.; minor light tone spot, Very Fine, a wonderful historial account which started the Second Seminole War.

Cds (type XIV) on 1847 folded letter to East Harwick, Mass., "By Express Mail" senders endorsement at lower left, rated "25" and apparently after noticed the senders endorsement and re-rated "75" with "Express Mail" reiterated at top; some cover toning and light edge wear, F.-V.F., the only recorded example of an express mail usage from St. Augustine, ex Rice; with signed S. Ashbrook comment card.

Cds (type IV) on 1837 folded letter to Tallahassee with manuscript "18¾" rate, forwarded to Monticello with oval "Tallahassee, Flora., Augt 13, 1837" date stamp (type VI) and manuscript forwarded "6" totalling "31" (?), contents regarding a congress appropriation…For a Light house on the most suitable site at or near the east entrance from the Gulf of Mexico into Appalachicola Bay; minor cover wear at top, Very Fine.
