Carrier, 1851 (1¢) Franklin, Double Transfer. Showing doubling in "Stamp" and stars in bottom label, mostly large margins to clear at bottom right, cancelled by neat red star carrier handstamp on cover to New York City, blue "Philadelphia, Pa., 5cts, Dec. 6" integral rate cds; cover with light central vertical file fold and rebacked small edge tears at top, Very Fine, a magnificent example of the 1851, 1¢ Franklin Carrier Double Transfer on cover from Philadelphia, Pa., a great rarity as this cover is one of only two examples of the double transfer variety on cover, ex Worthington, Caspary.

Only 18 on covers examples of the 1¢ Franklin carrier are known on cover from only three cities. One usage from New Orleans, La., three from New York City and 14 examples from Philadelphia, Pa.

Vertical pair, o.g., lightly hinged, well centered amid wide margins, beautiful rich bold color and exceptional freshness, Very Fine and choice, a lovely example of this rare 1908 5¢ blue experimental coil pair; with 1961 and 1998 P.F. certificates and 2007 P.S.E. Graded certificate (VF-XF 85).

Lot 2229 BK   

Potato Tax, 1935, 25 lb. black brown, Unexploded Booklet. Containing 11 of the original 16 panes of 12 (5 were removed at some time), with purple handstamp on buff cover, original staples intact but perhaps reassembled; usual centering of the panes as described in Scott footnote to these issues; stamps are fresh with gum fully undisturbed and all interleaving in place, bottom pane slightly out of alignment resulting in its left edge having couple flaws; front cover with slight bit of soiling and trivial creasing along staple line; this booklet is exceedingly rare, possibly unique, complete unexploded booklet, o.g., never hinged.

Charleston, S.C., Honour's City Express, 1849, 2¢ black on yellow. Cut to shape, manuscript canceled and affixed by red wafer seal with sealing impression "tying" stamp on fresh 1850 folded letter sheet to New York City, red "Charleston, S.C., 10, Jun 26" integral rate cds and matching straight line "Paid" handstamp; stamp with small tear, F.-V.F. and attractive, a lovely example of this great on cover rarity, with only four examples known of the 1849, 2¢ Honour's stamp on yellow paper of which only three are known on cover, ex Ferrary, Golden; with 1999 P.F. certificate.

Lot 1244    

Philadelphia Despatch Post, 1843 (3¢) black on grayish. Large margins, light blue manuscript cancel and tied by red "3" handstamp on locally addressed folded letter sheet with the stamp tied by the ink from the address at bottom left, red "D.O. Blood & Co., City Despatch, Paid" circular handstamp at left; sheet missing sideflaps, the tying portion of the "3" handstamp has been enhanced and the manuscript docketing on reverse has been altered from "1845" to "1843", Very Fine appearance, still an extremely rare usage of the City Despatch Post striding messenger stamp on cover and the only known usage showing D.O. Blood & Co. using the predecessor Robertson & Co. adhesive and numeral handstamp, ex Kleman, Emerson, Brown; with 2010 P.F. certificate.

Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States. Autograph document signed "Abraham Lincoln" as president (in full and in unfaded ink), first call for troops to fight in the Civil War under the Enrollment Act of March 3, 1863, this call issued September 5, 1863, to the Seventh Congressional District of the State of Ohio (one page printed on full sheet on bright white laid paper), Very Fine, a wonderful full signature on a historic Civil War Document, ex-Risvold (whose album page with brief write-up accompanies).
