(Calaveras) Mokulumne Hill, Cal./Jan. 13. Early cds on 1854 folded cover to France with straight line "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "26" paying the West Coast rate to France, Very Fine, a nice Trans-Atlantic usage.

Lot 203    

(Calaveras) Mokulumne Hill, Cal./Sep. 7. Cds and "5" handstamped rate marking struck twice with one strike deleted with pen strokes on stampless folded letter to Monterey, letter is datelined "Sept the 4th, 1853" and is from a miner who has "bought two claims which will take one year at least to work them out" and who has "spent near five thousand in the last year amongst the women without doubt… I am determined to quit gambling and whoring and save my money and when I work out those two claims to come down the country and buy me a ranch and settle down for I am tired of this kind of life.", minor toning at the folds, Very Fine.

(Calaveras) Murphy's, Cal./Aug. 28. Cds and "Paid 6" handstamp in oval on buff cover to New York with wonderful illustrated Miner's design "Mining Scene" depicting Miner Panning for Gold with Long Tom in the background, "J.M. Hutchings California Envelope" imprint at left, "Anthony & Bakert SC" engraver's imprint at bottom of design, some cover wear, F.-V.F.

(Calaveras) Poverty Bar, Cal., May 4. Balloon cds on cover to New Kingston, New York franked with 1857 5¢ red brown type I two singles (top stamp with pre-use tear) tied by additional strikes of the cds, endorsed "via Panama", cover tear at left, bottom backflap missing, F.-V.F., a very rare use of the red brown 5¢ in California, ex-Myerson, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 316).

Manuscript postmark on cover to "Fifteen Mile House, Mokelumne Hill Road" (Foreman's Ranch) franked with uncancelled 1857 3¢ dull red (s.e. at right), with original letter from a woman to her sister, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, ex-Myerson, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 316).
