Confederacy, Osceola, Ark./July 29 (1861). With manuscript Paid 5¢ rate on cover to "Capt. Elliot Fletcher, Jr., Company O, Fletcher Rifles, Hindman's Legion, Pocahontas, Ark.", cover with some water staining, F.-V.F.

Lot 322    

Confederacy, Warrington, Fla./Jan. 16 (1862). Cds with both encircled (due) "5" and (due) "10" handstamps (Dietz type IA & IB) on unrecognized U.S. 3¢ Star-Die entire addressed to "W. W. Casper Esq., Nashville, Tennessee" with soldier endorsement of "Private W. Bell Co D 10th Regt Miss Vols", included is original enclosure, some edge creasing/tears, Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Wat Bell is apparently the private in question. Often amusing long 2-page literate soldier's letter headed "Camp Phillips near Warrington, Fla January 15th 1862" mostly re camp life with relief from boredom "by the exchange of a few cannon balls and bomb shells from our neighbors across the Bay but so soon as our friendly exchanges of shot (no one ever gets hurt - at least on our side) ceases, camp life becomes dull again".

Confederacy, * Savannah * Geo./Jun. 29 [1861]. Cds with handstamped "Paid" and manuscript "Paid 2" in pencil on 12-page pamphlet, "A Sermon Preached to The Pulaski Guards" (plus covers), 5½" x 8½", a moving Sermon delivered to the Pulaski Guards by Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, D. D., Rector of Christ Church, Savannah "On the Second Sunday after Trinity, being the Sunday before their departure to join the Army in Virginia"; pamphlet addressed to Dr. M.F. Daughtry, Portsmouth, Virginia with manuscript "Printed Matter Paid" at lower left, abrasion on front cover matches that on inside back cover where the pamphlet would have been folded in half and sealed, Very Fine and attractive, Ex-Myerson, Cipolla.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Pamphlets up to three ounces were charged 2¢ postage; Quite rare rate and pamphlet.

Confederacy, Georgia Town Postmarks. 9 covers; stampless including Speir's Turn Out, Ga. cds & "Paid 3" on cover to James Reid in California with manuscript "Due 7", 1834 folded letter with manuscript Ratown which includes militia information regarding either the Creek or Seminole War, 1832 manuscript Gainesville & 1850 Pond Town, franked covers including red Buckeye and Irwinton balloon cds on ladies cover, F.-V.F. overall.

Manuscript postmark and matching "Pd 10" rating on adversity cover made from newsprint, addressed to Richmond, Va., forwarded to Crawfordsville with "Richmond, Va./Feb. 27" cds (Powell type 6i) and "Forwarded 10" boxed handstamp, "care of Vice President Stephens" endorsement; small cover repair at top right affecting manuscript rate marking, slightly reduced at top & missing backflap, Very Fine.

Confederacy, Columbus, Ky./Jan. Cds with "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "5" rate on cover to Richmond, the manuscript rate was corrected to "10" as this was over 500 miles, forwarded to Camden, S.C. with "Richmond, Va./Feb. 22, 1862" cds (Powell #2c) & boxed "Forwarded 5" handstamp, cover forwarded a second time with red "Camden, S.C./Feb. 26" cds to Columbia, flap tear which extends just onto front, F.-V.F., a wonderful usage.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Bold cds on buff cover to Eggs Point, Miss. with manuscript "Due 5" rating, additional "Due 5" handstamp applied in Memphis, Tenn, "Bolivar Troop" soldiers endorsement; slight reduction at right and upper right corner repair, Very Fine appearance, a scarce Kentucky Confederate States use.
