Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Deep Blue, Keatinge & Ball Printing. Corner margin plate block of 18 with plate "No. 3" and Keatinge & Ball imprint, o.g., two stamps hinged, other never hinged, intensely rich color, large margins, crease between 4th and 5th vertical rows and light margin tone spots at bottom, otherwise Very Fine, a handsome plate block.

Lot 565    

Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ Blue. Large margins, small surface abrasion, tied by bold "Charleston S.C. Dec 4" cds on adversity cover made from printed ledger form, addressed "Lt. Col. Wilmot G. de Saussure" at Columbia S.C., forwarded upon arrival back to Charleston with horizontal pair of 1862, 5¢ light blue, Archer & Daly (large margins), affixed over 10¢ and tied by blue "Columbia S.C. Dec 24" cds, Very Fine and attractive.

After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War. He commanded the force of reserves, which engaged in the defense of Charleston, and was appointed Adjutant General of South Carolina.

Margins to slightly cut in, tied by "Thomasville, Ga." cds on turned cover to Albany with "Advertised" straightline handstamp and "Albany, Ga./Apr. 1, 1865" cds for forwarding to Macon Geo. with straight line "Due 10" handstamp, reverse with 2nd Albany cds & manuscript forwarding instructions, inside franked with 1863, 10¢ milky blue (#12a, large margins), tied by "Macon, Ga." cds on reverse & used to Decatur, small cover repair at right edge, Very Fine, a wonderful & interesting usage, ex-Finney.

Horiz. pair with enormous margins, minor margin staining, tied "Savannah, Ga./Oct. 7" cds on legal size envelope "To Judge Probate, Columbia County, Fl[orid]a" with handstamped "Paid" and red crayon "20", large docketing across center of cover "B.F. Allen, Tallahassee, Fla" and "Camp Muhlins Company", docketing indicates contents were Election Returns, part of back flap missing, edge faults, Fine (no photo).
