Lot 2063 ()   

Union Despatch, Chicago, Ill., 10¢ brown. Rough perf. 14, on a thick stiff distinctive paper as the 5¢ & 20¢ values, without gum, s.e. at top, faults including corner crease and tear at top and right, still Fine appearance, this being the discovery example of the 10¢ Union "Dispatch" stamp, one of only two examples known.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This stamp was reported by Carl Kane in the January 2003 edition of the Penny Post. To date, only one other example of 10¢ denomination has been discovered.

Lot 2064 ()   

Concord Bicycle Co., 1892-96, 12½¢ red and blue. Without gum, s.e. at left, bright and fresh, small corner crease at lower left and tiny perf tear at right, otherwise Very Fine, a lovely example of this rare messenger service stamp, with approximately ten examples recorded.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The Concord Bicycle Co., located in Concord, N.H. and operated by manager Frank H. Crapo, is reported to have run a public messenger service from 1892 to as late as 1896.

Union Despatch, Chicago, Ill., 5¢ red. Rough perf. 14, light manuscript cancel, bold color, light corner crease, otherwise Very Fine, one of approximately ten examples of the 5¢ Union Despatch stamps known.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The Union Despatch Co. operated between 1855-59 by proprietor Edmund G. Stiles, with his general western office residing at 139 Lake St. in Chicago. These stamps have been regarded as being issued by Stiles and are among the first perforated stamps used during the same time of the unofficial Chicago trial perforations on U.S. issues.

Prince's Letter Dispatch, 1861, black. With blue company serrated oval handstamp and Boston, Mass. duplex cancels, large margins, thins, Very Fine appearance, a very scarce handstamp.

Rickets & Hall, 1857, 1¢ red on bluish. Outer address circle removed, pencil cancel, small purple handstamp on reverse, Fine, a rare example of the Rickets & Hall "One Cent Dispatch" adhesive, only seven examples recorded with three examples having been cut to shape removing the outer address circle.
