Violet cds on 1884 cover to Los Angeles, Cal., with red boxed "Paid All" handstamp alongside, sent to Auckland and franked with N.Z. 1882, 6d brown tied by "A" barred oval handstamp and blue crayon strokes, reverse with "Auckland, 17 Ju, 84" transit and red San Francisco, Paid All, Jul 14 cds, Los Angeles receiving postmark and additional duplex and Dead Letter Office triangle date stamp, backflap with German Consulate seal; light cover soiling and edge flaws including reduction at right, Fine, an extremely rare early Municipal Post Office period cover as this is the only known cover routed through Auckland, New Zealand (Odenweller MO3).

Mostly complete strike of cds on ca. 1885 folded paper bag addressed to St. Helena, Cal. addressed in the hand of William Blacklock (who became American Vice Consul General in Samoa in 1886) and endorsed "Photographs only", franked with U.S. 1882-83, 5¢ gray brown + 2¢ red brown + 4¢ blue green (Sc. 205+210+211) tied by red segmented cork cancels, matching" San Francisco, Cal., Pd. All, Apr 20" cds alongside; some wrinkling in paper bag, F.-V.F., an unusual and rare combination franking usage (Odenweller M07).

Clear cds on oversized linen cover addressed to the German consul William Hennings in Levuka, Fiji, franked with Fiji 1878, 2d green, two singles + 6d burnt red tied by "Levuka, Fiji, 4 Sp, 1885" cds's, manuscript "Per Saucy Lass" ship endorsement; central cover file fold and some minor tone spots, F.-V.F., an unusual 10d rate and one of three usages to Fiji during the Municipal Post Office period (Odenweller M13).

Clear violet cds on 1886 cover to Berlin, Germany, franked with U.S. 1882, 5¢ yellow brown tied by cork cancel, reverse with "San Francisco, Cal., Rec'd, Aug 8" entry and "San Francisco, Cal., Stm. Ship, Aug 9" cds with additional New York transit postmark, Very Fine, one of eleven such franked usages to Germany during the Municipal Post Office period (Odenweller M21).

The notation at lower left of cover is that of R. Schmidt, who worked at the German Consulate in Apia, Samoa.

Lot 2275    

Samoa, U.S.S. "Mohican" Pacific Station, Harbor of Apia, Upolu I, Samoan Group, South Pacific Ocean, September 14th/15th/ 1886. Manuscript "Ship's Letter" endorsement on triple rate legal size cover to Asbury Park, N.J., entered the U.S. mails with "San Francisco, Cal., Rec'd, Oct 2" cds and matching "Ship" in circle handstamp and "U.S. Charge to Collect/15 Cents" handstamp with "15" crossed out and rerated "25" for triple rate plus 10¢ penalty for not being prepaid, with blue "U.S.S. Mohican, Sep 15, 1886" ship cds, receiving backstamp; cover reduced at right, Very Fine, a rare "outside the mails" ship letter usage from Apia, Samoa during the Municipality Post Office period.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The U.S.S. "Mohican" was a steam sloop of war, launched in December 1883 and sent to Callao, Peru in 1886 and then to Samoan waters to protect American interests from German political interference. In July 1886 it sailed to Australian before returning to Peruvian waters.
