City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ black on grayish, left margin block of 4, o.g., lightly hinged at top, bottom stamps never hinged, large margins, bright and fresh, Extremely Fine, an attractive and choice multiple; with 1993 P.F. certificate.

Lot 1940    

Davis' Penny Post, 1856 (1¢) black on lilac, "Pennq" error. Type B, position 2, manuscript pencil cancel, large top right sheet margins, other sides ample to just touching, insignificant tiny corner creases at bottom and small red mark on back, Extremely Fine, the Finest of the Three Used Examples of the "Pennq" Error, of which four are known in total. this corner margin example is proof that the error occupied position 2 in the setting, ex Chapman; with 1999 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 57L1a    $8,250.

This stamp was part of the C. E. Chapman collection and, as far back as the 1890's, it was affixed to an 1852 folded letter to which it did not belong.

Robison & Co., 1855-56, 1¢ black on blue, margins ample to in at right, certificate notes "unused…slight discoloration at top" which is actually the watery blue cancellation known to have been used by Robison & Co., Fine, an Extremely Rare Example of the Robison & Co. Stamp With Only 8 Recorded Examples, ex Kuphal; with 1998 P.F. certificate.

Wells Fargo & Co., 1861-70, black "To be Dropped in the New York Post Office", without gum, margins clear to mostly large, deep shade, Very Fine and choice, one of finest examples of this rare to the Post Office stamp, accompanied by company corner card cover from which this was removed.
