1846 Marseilles, France To Boston, Mass. Folded letter with manuscript "21" decimes on reverse prepaid in France (10 decimes owed to G.B. and 11 decimes French inland in the 750-900 kilometers postal zone) red "Ship 6" due handstamp to the addressee at port of entry rate in the U.S.; file folds, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Sent via Cunard Line - Steamer Caledonia, departing Liverpool on April 4th and arriving at Boston on April 20th.

1849 Paris, France To Philadelphia, Pa. Folded letter with manuscript "15" prepaid rate on reverse (5 decimes French and 10 decimes British), red Liverpool transit cds and "5" in circle handstamp for U.S. inland due the addressee, Very Fine, period following U.S.-G.B. postal convention of a little over 5 months (February 15 to Jul - 31, 1849) where French inland was still based on mileage.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Sent via Cunard Line - Steamer Niagara, departing Liverpool on June 30th and arriving at New York on July 14th.

Lot 331    

1850-51 Phalsbourg, France To Indiana. Folded letter franked with France 1849, 10c bister, two single + 1850, 40c orange paying 60 centimes per 7.5 grams French ship rate to the port of departure, tied by diamond grid handstamps with matching origin cds at left, "New York, 34cts, Jan 17" entry cds (24 cents per half ounce American packet rate, 10 cents per half ounce U.S. inland over 300 miles); light cover soiling and edge wear, F.-V.F., since the New York & Havre Line commenced service on October 5, 1850 and the direct rate changed on July 1, 1851, this rate was only in effect for nine months, during which only 5 sailings were west bound and 7 east bound, a difficult use particularly prepaid by stamps.

Sent via Havre Line - departed Havre on January 1st and arrived at Southampton on January 2nd and New York on January 16th of 1851.

1851 Paris, France To Philadelphia, Pa. Double rate folded letter sheet franked with France 1849, 20c black, 5 singles + 1f carmine, two singles paying the double 1.5 francs per 7.5 grams via G.B., bold "New York, 21, Feb 20" entry cds (21 cents per half ounce due the U.S. per British Open Mail (5 cents U.S. inland, 16 cents sea) which was debited to G.B.; file folds and light blue staining at right affecting 1fr stamps, F.-V.F. appearance.
Scott No. 3+9    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Sent per Collins Line - Per steamer Baltic, departing Liverpool on February 8th and arriving in New York on February 20th.

Folded letter sheet franked with France 1853, 40c orange, four singles tied by red "1495" dotted lozenge cancels paying double 1.5 francs per 7.5 grams via G.B., "N. York Am. Pkt., 21, Nov 24" entry cds (British Open Mail with 5¢ U.S. inland & 16¢ sea) which was debited to G.B.; horizontal file fold affecting one stamp, otherwise Very Fine.

1854 Paris, France To San Francisco, Cal. Folded letter franked with France 1853, 25c blue, pair + 1fr lake, pair paying the 2.50 francs per 7.5 grams rate via Panama, tied by dotted roller cancels, "20" steamship rate handstamp applied in San Francisco to be collected from addressee; light pressed out file folds affecting 25c pair and right 1fr stamp, otherwise Very Fine, still a a spectacular cover, ex Gallagher.

Sent via Royal Mail Steamship Company - Per steamer Magdalena, departing Southampton on June 2nd and arriving in St. Thomas June 16th. Transferred to the Steamer Teviot, departing St. Thomas June 19th and arriving at Chagres June 25th and then by Pacific Mail Steamship Company - Steamer Sonora departing Panama on July 2nd and arriving in San Francisco July 15th.

1855-62 Madison, Ind. To and From Ireland. 3 stampless covers from correspondence; includes 1855 cover to Madison with Belfast origin cds, "Boston Br. Pkt., 24, Nov 24" exchange cds and "19 Cents" credit handstamp, 1859 cover to Dundalk, Ireland with Madison origin cds and "Paid" & "24" handstamps, red "19" credit handstamp, and 1862 mourning cover to Madison with Dundalk origin cds and New York entry cds, Very Fine.

Pkt., 5, Apr 11" cds; light vertical crease affecting 40c, otherwise Very Fine, this was carried on the last sailing of the 13 sailings during the 3 months period.

Cover franked with France 1853-54, 20c blue + 40c orange, six singles overpaying the double 8 decimes per 7.5 grams rate via British Packet (Jan. 1 to March 31, 1857), previous rate was 1.30 francs per 7.5 grams, according this was paid twice that amount because the sender wasn't aware of the rate change, "N. York Br. Pkt., 5, Feb 7" entry cds with due to the addressee based on the half ounce British Open Mail rate; 20c stamp with crease and some light cover soiling, F.-V.F.
