Lot 72    

San Francisco, Cal., Dec 2 (San Francisco). Clear cds (SAF-260) on 1849 legal size cover addressed to the postmaster at Vernon, Cal., manuscript "Official Business, R.T.P. Allen, Agent" endorsement; some light edge wear and slightly reduced at left, F.-V.F., a rare early San Francisco free frank usage from Postal Agent Colonel Allen to one of his newly established post offices in Vernon.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

William Van Voorhies established the first official Post Offices in California at Monterey and San Francisco in February of 1849. He was then replaced as Special Postal Agent in California by R. T. P. Allen on March 30, 1849 after Postmaster General Cave Johnson under President James K. Polk was succeeded by Postmaster General Jacob Collamer under President Zachary Taylor. Allen's duties were soon over after this date.

San Francisco, Cal., Sep 17 (San Francisco). Cds (Williams SAF-280) and matching "1" drop rate handstamp on 1851 folded letter handcarried from Mexico with "por vapor Independencia" heading, Very Fine, a rare drop rate usage, ex Pearce.

San Francisco, Cal., Feb 1 (San Francisco). Red sharp strike of cds (Williams SAF-280) on folded letter sheet to the Treasury in Washington D.C., matching straight line "Free" handstamp, Very Fine and choice, ex Pearce.

San Francisco, Cal., Sep 1 (San Francisco). Blue cds (Williams SAF-360) with matching "Paid" and "5" rate handstamps on 1852 printed circular to Boston, Mass., Extremely Fine, a very rare 5¢ circular rate from the West Coast used on the last month of this rate, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

San Francisco, Cal., 20, Jun 16 (San Francisco). Red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-510) with partial "Paid" handstamp on 1853 cover to Sacket Harbor, N.Y., with original enclosure mention the various mail steamers, Very Fine, postmark predates Williams earliest listing by 4 years.

San Francisco, Cal., Jun 16 (San Francisco). Cds (Williams SAF-360) on 1855 folded letter to the Consul of Denmark in Valparaiso, Chile, matching straight line "Paid" handstamp and red manuscript "24" rate with initial pencil "48", Very Fine, a very scarce usage to Valparaiso.
