1856-S $1 Indian Princess Head, Small Head, Doubled "S" Mint Mark Variety. PCGS graded AU-50. Discovered by Walter Breen in 1959. Nearly half of the extra S, to the upper right of the S mint mark, is plain. A total of 24,600 pieces were struck, which is scarce in all grades, and rare at the Mint State level. Mintage 24,600 (PCGS Pop. 29 in AU-50, only 89 graded higher, the highest grade being a single MS-64 example. Total of 167 in all grades, 9/27/11).

Lot 192

1856-S $1 Indian Princess Head, Small Head, Doubled "S" Mint Mark Variety. Very Fine/Extremely Fine. The 1856-S is much more difficult than any Type Two gold dollar issue, even the 1855-O. In 1856 only the San Francisco Mint produced gold dollars with this design. Mintage 24,600.
Estimate $500 - 750.
