$3 Indian Princess Head (1873 -1889)

Lots 529-538 Lots 539-547

Lot 529

1873 $3 Gold. Closed 3. PCGS graded AU-50. The 1873 Closed (or Close) 3 three dollar gold pieces struck for circulation are a mystery with no apparent solution in sight. It is thought that perhaps they may have been struck later than the date they bear. Guesses on the mintage have ranged from 100 to 1,000 pieces, but in any case they are keys to the series, usually found in XF or AU grades, as on the present AU50 coin. (PCGS Pop. 6 in AU-50, 52 graded higher, the highest grade being two MS-64 examples. Total of 65 in all grades, 9/26/11).
Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

Realized: $11,000

Lot 537

1881 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-53. The 1881 three dollar posses the lowest reported circulation strike mintage of the entire series, at 500 pieces, and as such it joins a select and small group of sub-1,000-coin mintages among U.S. gold issues. The Bowers series reference estimates that only 100-150 survivors exist today, including both circulated and Mint State coins. (PCGS Pop. 11 in AU-53, 73 graded higher, the highest grade being a single MS-66 example. Total of 95 in all grades, 9/30/11).
