The 1866 half eagle is important not only as the first year of the With Motto reverse, but the issue is also a rarity in its own right. Only 6,700 pieces were struck and fewer than 90 pieces have been seen in all grades by NGC and PCGS. The surviving population is estimated at less than 100 examples. (PCGS Pop. 7 in AU-50, only 10 graded higher, the highest grade a single MS-61, the next highest being five AU-55 examples. Total of 36 in all grades, 9/24/11).
