1866 $5 Liberty. With Motto. PCGS graded AU-50. Small ding in obverse field. The 1866 half eagle is important not only as the first year of the With Motto reverse, but the issue is also a rarity in its own right. Only 6,700 pieces were struck and fewer than 90 pieces have been seen in all grades by NGC and PCGS. The surviving population is estimated at less than 100 examples. (PCGS Pop. 7 in AU-50, only 10 graded higher, the highest grade a single MS-61, the next highest being five AU-55 examples. Total of 36 in all grades, 9/24/11).

1866-S $5 Liberty. With motto. PCGS graded EF-40. Both 1866-S issues (With Motto and No Motto) are extremely rare in the higher circulated grades and all but unknown in Mint State. The surviving population is estimated at less than 100 examples. Mintage 34,920 (PCGS Pop. 10 in EF-40, only 17 graded higher, the highest grade being three AU-58 examples, the next highest being a single AU-53. Total of 56 in all grades, 9/24/11).
