Lot 1496

1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. (Denver, Colorado) $10 Gold. PCGS graded VF-35, a wonderful example of this popular Territorial Coin. While the vision of Pikes Peak on the obverse of the Clark, Gruber ten dollar coin looks nothing like the mountain itself, the notion of "Pikes Peak Gold" became an inspiration for gold-seekers a decade after the California boom. This is a rare example of the popular 1860 edition of the Clark, Gruber eagle, shows some black dirt build up mostly in the lettering on the obverse & reverse. (PCGS Pop. 2 in VF-35, 87 graded higher, and a total of 95 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

Realized: $12,500

Lot 1497

1861 Clark, Gruber & Co. (Denver, Colorado) $2.50 Gold. PCGS graded AU-55. The famous Pike's Peak Gold Rush and the state's mineral riches echo today in many place names in present-day Colorado, such as Golden, Aurora, Leadville, Silverton, and many others. The firm of Clark, Gruber made quarter eagles only in 1860 and 1861, but the 1861s are notably more elusive in the higher circulated grades and lower Mint State grades. This is a lovely Choice AU piece with deep reddish-gold coloration. (PCGS Pop. 15 in AU-55, only 17 graded higher, the highest grade being two MS-63 examples, and a total of 61 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

Realized: $10,000
