Lot 1770    

Confederacy, Alexandria, Va./May 23, 1861, double circle postmark with matching straight line "FREE" handstamp on orange cover to the Postmaster in Sangerville, Va., includes original enclosure, reduced at left, Very Fine and a scarce usage of the United States Free Postmaster's handstamp during the Confederacy.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This is a legal usage as the postmaster's "FREE" was not abolished by the CSA until the CSA Postal Service took over on 6/1/1861. This is also the Last Day of CSA usage from Alexandria as the town was formally occupied the next day by the Union Army.

Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., May 3 (1861), blue cds tying U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red on cover to Lawrenceville, Ga., Very Fine, a lovely Confederate States usage.
Scott No. U.S. 26    Estimate $200 - 300.

South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860 and was admitted to the Confederacy on February 4, 1861. The Union Army abandoned Fort Moultrie on the night of December 26, 1860.

Confederacy, Mobile, Ala., Feb 23, 1861, clear strike of cds tying U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red on 1861 folded prices current to Boston, Mass., embossed commission merchant corner card, Very Fine, Alabama was admitted into the Confederacy on February 4th, 1861.

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., Apr 12, 1861, cds and target duplex tying U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red on cover addressed to Howell Cobb while he was President of the Confederate Provisional Congress in Montgomery, Ala., bottom left corner with wax seal toning and slight impression of an affixed 3 Cent Coin, reverse with initial "Savannah, Ga., Apr 6, 1861" duplex cds, Very Fine, an attractive U.S. Used in the Confederacy Usage on the First Day of the Civil War.

Confederacy, United States 1853-57 3¢ Nesbitt entire, Used in the Confederacy, cancelled by "Richmond, Va./May 30, 1861" cds to Orange Court House, Va., Very Fine, ex-Thayer; used two days before formal start of Confederate States Post Office.

Lot 1776    

Confederacy, United States 1857 10¢ Green, Type V, Used in the Confederate States (beautiful stamp) tied by "New Orleans, La./15 Feb." (1861) cds on folded cover originating in Cuba and sent via New Orleans to Vera Cruz, Mexico, couple trivial worm holes at right of cover, Very Fine cover & a rare usage, The docketing on the flap confirms the 1861 year date and shows that the actual city of origin was Havana, Cuba. Privately carried from Havana to Confederate New Orleans where it was placed in the mail with the 10¢ franking for mailing to Vera Cruz.

Lot 1777    

Confederacy, United States 1857 3¢ Dull Red, Used in Confederate States, two singles (double weight) tied together on cover by the Richmond, Va./May 22, 1861 cds, addressed to Miss Mary M. McGuire Care of Dr. Wm McGuire, Berryville Clark Co, Va., upper left corner struck with "Winchester, Va./May 30, 1861" double circle postmark, little edge toning at the right and adhesives with small flaws, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Berryville is just east of Winchester in the adjacent county. Either the cover was accidentally missent to Winchester or transmitted Winchester and the postmark applied as a transit mark.

Confederacy, United States 1857 5¢ Brown, Used in the Confederate States, horizontal pair (very nice stamps affixed upside down but with part of the imprint at the left) on a Trans-Atlantic Cover from New Orleans, La to Spain, stamps tied by "New Orleans, La./Mar. 4 1861" cds and sent via New York with red "New York Br, Pkt." cds & black "12. Rs." Spanish due handstamp, The British Packet "Adriatic" of the Cunard Line carried the cover and arrived in Queenstown 23 MAR 1861, minor bit of cover toning, Very Fine and rare usage, A truly spectacular cover.
