(Experimental Perforations) 3¢ Red Brown, Type II, Unofficial "Chicago" Perf 12½, position 74L3, tied by bold strike of "Chicago Ill. Jan. 23, 1857" town cancel on small piece, deep rich color and nicely centered, perforations all around but slightly blunted at bottom left and lower right, Very Fine, an attractive example of the 3¢ Chicago perforation in a distinctive deep shade; with 1968 and 2010 P.F. certificates.

(Experimental Perforations) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, Unofficial "Chicago" Perf 12½, Two Singles, positions 64L5L & 9L5L, tied by neat strike of "Chicago Ill. Oct. 8, 1856" cds on orange cover addressed to R. K. Swift at the Clarendon Hotel in N.Y. and forwarded to Boston Mass., red "Forwarded" handstamp crossed out and with "Please take notice I am" with forwarding hand drawn in; cover defective at left and right stamp light diagonal crease from cover, F.-V.F., a remarkable cover bearing two 3¢ Chicago Perf stamps and addressed to R. K. Swift, the promoter of the Hadley Perforating Machine.; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

(Illustrated) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, clear to ample margins, neatly tied by "Providence, R.I., Jun 15" cds on allover "Phonography" advertising cover with imprint of "Benn Pitman, Cincinnati, Ohio" at bottom, addressed to Grafton, Mass., Extremely Fine.

Sir Isaac Pitman was an Englishman who invented phonographic shorthand, or phonography, a shorthand system based on phonetics. As it could be adapted to a wide variety of languages, it became one of the most widely used systems in the world. It was his brother, Benn, who popularized phonography in America.
