Lot 174    

1843 (Feb. 27) Preston, Upper Canada to Württemberg, folded letter with bearing "Preston U.C., 27 February 1843" split-ring d.s. with manuscript dating, manuscript "Paid 25cts.1/3c" and "Paid 7" totaled to "1/10" that prepaid all transit fees to Boston, carried by Cunard Line Columbia from Boston Apr. 2 to Liverpool arriving Apr. 15, London (4.16) transit backstamp, various manuscript ratings with final "3f52" (3 florin 53kr.) due from addressee, Very Fine, a scarce letter from Canada to Württemberg via England and the Netherlands.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Lot 175    

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Dec. 26) Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York, N.Y., folded letter endorsed "pr Boston via Boston", letter taken directly to British schooner Boston that was en route to California with a call at Boston, it departed Halifax Dec. 27 to New York arriving Jan. 3, red "Boston Mass. Jan" cds with matching "Ship" handstamp and red crayon "21" due rating for 5¢ inland postage and retaliatory 16¢ ship fee, Extremely Fine, ship letter retaliatory rate usages are exceedingly rare.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Retaliatory regulations imposed a 16¢ fee for letters brought in by British ship, the same charge as the British imposed (8 pence). The retaliatory ship letters are scarce since most mail was carried by contract steamships (24¢, 29¢ or 34¢ retaliatory fees) or American sailing vessels for which no retaliatory fee was charged.

1853 (Aug. 9) Montreal, Canada to Schiedam, Holland, folded letter with Montreal (8.9) origin cds, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York Aug. 10 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 21, red London (8.22) backstamp, manuscript "1/10" 1s10d U.K. debit to Holland (corrected from 1s4d), red Schiedam (8.24) arrival backstamp, manuscript "140" Dutch Cents postage due rating; Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter was sent unpaid in closed British mails through New York. The British debit consisted of 2d BNA internal, 2d U.S. transit, 8d transatlantic and 10d Br. transit fees.

Lot 177    

1857 (May 8) St. John's, Newfoundland to London, England, folded letter carried by N. Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. Khersonese from St. John's May 10 to Liverpool to Liverpool arriving May 22, Liverpool Ship (5.22) backstamp and manuscript "8" updated to correct "6" pence for incoming ship letter from Newfoundland, file fold, F.-V.F., Covers carried by N. Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. Khersonese are quite scarce. Only one other letter carried by this line has been recorded. A scarce non-contract steamship voyage.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

"Khersonese" made one round voyage for the Liverpool, Newfoundland & Halifax Steam Navigation Company in 1856 and two round voyages for thee North Atlantic Steam Navigation Company in 1857, travelling between Liverpool, St. John's, Halifax, and Portland.

1859 (Dec. 31) Hamburg to Quebec, Canada via New York, buff cover with red "Hamburg Paid Dec 31" cds with matching "10" cent prepaid rating h.s., carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from Hamburg Jan. 3 to New York arriving Jan. 26, red "N. York Hamb. Pkt. Jan 27" exchange cds, Toronto (1.28) and Quebec (1.30) backstamp, minor ink erosion, some minor paper loss on back, Very Fine, a scarce Hamburg Treaty cover to Canada.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter prepaid equivalent of 10¢ for all transit fees to New York, where letter sent to Toronto. Letter forwarded to Quebec. Since no postage due was indicated in Canada, the recipient may have had the free frank privilege as government official.

Realized: $350
