Transatlantic Mail from Greece

1843 (Jan. 20) Athens, Greece to New York, N.Y., folded letter with London Paid (3.25) d.s. with red manuscript "1/" shilling rating, Liverpool (3.26) transit, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Apr. 4 to Boston arriving Apr. 19, red "Boston 'Ship' Apr 19" cds with matching "39½" rate h.s., Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried privately to London where it was posted. Boston marked 39½¢ postage due in New York for a letter containing one enclosure (2¢ ship fee plus 2x18¼¢ inland fee to New York). This is the discovery copy of this marking, which is unlisted in Blake & Davis.

1867 (Nov. 2) Athens, Greece to New York, N.Y., folded cover with Athens (10.21) cds and French "Greece, 11 Nov" entry cds, carried by Inman Line City of Washington from Queenstown Nov. 14 to New York arriving Nov. 25, various manuscript and h.s. ratings, some ink erosion, Fine, a very scarce letter from Greece by French treaty.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Letter date in Gregorian calendar was 2 November 1867. Paris marked 2x18=36¢ debit to U.S. for double rate letter by American packet service direct to New York, then crossed through and marked 2x27=54¢ debit for British packet service via England. This too was crossed through and finally marked 2x21=42¢ debit for American packet service via G.B. New York marked postage due in dual rates in upper right, 81¢ in coin and 60¢ in depreciated greenback currency.

1870 (Oct. 15) Athens, Greece to New York, N.Y., blue folded cover with Athens cds sent unpaid and endorsed "America via Trieste", black crayon "3½" and blue crayon "6½" ratings, carried by Hapag Line Thuringia from Queenstown Oct. 27 to New York arriving Nov. 8, New York "32" cent depreciated currency due rating, Very Fine, a rare cover from Greece by NGU mail.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter posted 3 October 1870 Julian calendar in use in Greece (15 October 1870 Gregorian calendar). Trieste marked 6½ silbergroschen due (32.5 neukreuzer) for 17.5 nkr. owed to Austrian Lloyd steamship company plus 15 nkr. international fee for direct service. Prussia only debited U.S. 3½ silbergroschen in accordance with U.S.-NGU postal convention. New York marked 32¢ postage due in depreciated greenback currency. Postage due in coin would have been 30¢, or double the normal rate as letter was unpaid.
