Freight Money Letters by City of Origin (Auburn, N.Y. to New Orleans, La.)

Lot 64    

1840 (May 16) Baltimore, Md. to Schiedam, Holland, folded letter with partial red "Baltimore Md. May 17" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with "25" and "37½" ratings for 2x 12½¢ sailing ship freight money fee plus 2x 18¾¢ inland postage, carried by Black Ball Line Columbus from New York May 22 to Liverpool arriving June 16, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and matching "8" due rating h.s. for ship fee, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter was sent to Liverpool where forwarding agent, E. Busch & Co., paid incoming 8d ship rate and then sent letter under cover to Holland.

Lot 65    

1840 (Dec. 4) Baltimore, Md. to Rotterdam, Netherlands, folded letter showing red "Baltimore Md. Dec 4" cds with manuscript "18¾" and "25" ratings for 18¾¢ inland postage and 25¢ steamship freight money fee, red "New York Dec 10" cds and matching "Too Late" h.s., carried by Havre Line Formosa from New York Dec. 16 to Havre arriving Jan. 12, red Havre arrival cds, Rotterdam (1.16) arrival backstamp and manuscript "80" Dutch cents due rating, refolded, F.-V.F., a scarce freight money letter via France to Rotterdam.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter endorsed for the steamship Great Western from New York, however it arrived at New York the day after the steamship sailed. It was marked with a red handstamp "TOO LATE" and placed on the next sailing packet for France. The New York postmaster normally returned unused freight money fees to the origin post office. Letter marked for 80 Dutch Cents postage due, 50 Cents French transit and 30 Cents for Dutch transit from Bergen to Rotterdam. Letter considered a freight money cover even though it was transported across the Atlantic on a vessel that did not charge the freight money fee.

1842 (Jun. 4) Baltimore, Md. to Cognac, France, folded letter with blue "Baltimore Md. Jun 4" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with blue manuscript "37½" rating for 2x 18¾¢ inland postage and "50" rating for 2x 25¢ steamship freight money fee, carried by British Queen under Belgian flag from New York Jun. 7 to Southampton arriving Jun. 23, red London (6.23) cds and matching "Ship Letter" backstamps, manuscript "8" due rating for ship letter fee and "1/6" U.K. debit to France, red Calais (6.25) entry cds and manuscript "39" decimes due rating, Cognac (6.27) arrival backstamp, clean and Very Fine, Carried on the maiden return voyage of the British Queen under the Belgian flag, one of only two known freight money letters carried under Belgian flag.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

London foreign office debited France 1s6d (8d ship fee plus 10d to France). Paris marked 39 decimes postage due, 18 decimes to U.K. plus 21 decimes for 7½ gram letter going 600km from Calais to Cognac.

1842 (Oct. 6) Baltimore, Md. to London, England, folded over showing blue "Baltimore Md. Oct 6" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with magenta "18¾" and "25" ratings for 18¾¢ inland postage and 25¢ steamship freight money fee, carried by British Queen under Belgian flag from New York on 3rd return from New York Oct. 7 to Portsmouth arriving Nov. 3, red London (11.3) cds and "Ship Letter" backstamps, large manuscript "8" pence due rating for ship fee, Very Fine, one of only two known British Queen freight money letters carried under Belgian flag.

1846 (Jun. 5) Baltimore, Md. to Geneva, Switzerland via Liverpool, buff cover with blue "Baltimore Md. Jun 5" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with manuscript "5" inland and "25" freight money ratings, carried by Great Western S.S. Co. Great Britain from New York Jun. 8 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 22, red Liverpool (6.22) and London (6.23) transits with matching oval "PD" h.s., manuscript "11" rating, red Boulogne (6.25) entry cds, Very Fine, a scarce freight money usage to Switzerland.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter prepaid 5¢ inland fee to New York plus 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship. Brown Shipley & Company of Liverpool, acting as forwarding agents, paid the 8 pence incoming ship letter fee in Liverpool and reposted letter to Geneva, paying the 11 pence charge for mails via France (5d transit to France and 6d transit to Switzerland.

1839 (Nov. 22) Charleston, S.C. to Madeira via England, folded letter with black oval "Forwarded by/Herckenrath & Lowndes/Charleston" handstamp and red "Charleston S.C. Nov. 22" cds with matching "Paid" handstamps, red manuscript "25" for inland postage and "12½" cent rating for sailing ship freight money fee, carried by Black Ball Line Cambridge from New York Dec. 5 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 3, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" h.s. with manuscript "8" due rating, manuscript "Collman & Stolterfort" forwarder's endorsement on flap, reposted with red Liverpool (1.3) cds and matching "Paid at Liverpool" framed h.s. with red manuscript "2/8" prepaid 2s8d rating to Madeira, manuscript "160" Re-Issues due rating upper right, Very Fine, a very rare money letter to Madeira with double forwarder.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Forwarding agent in Liverpool, Collmann & Stolterfort, immediately re-posted letter to Madeira by Falmouth packet paying 2s8d (8d incoming ship letter fee from U.S., 4d uniform inland fee, and 1s8d packet rate to Madeira).

1840 (Aug. 25) Charleston, S.C. to Greenock, Scotland, folded letter with red "Charleston S.C. Aug 27" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with two large "25" rating h.s. for 25¢ steamship freight money fee and 25¢ inland postage, red New York (9.3) cds and matching "Too Late" handstamp, carried by Swallowtail Line "Roscoe" from New York Sep. 7 to Liverpool arriving Sep. 29, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and "8" pence due h.s. for ship fee, "Missent to Glasgow" framed h.s., Glasgow (9.30) backstamps, some docketing on front, Very Fine and remarkable use, This letter and one other mailed the same day in Charleston are the only two examples recorded of Charleston using handstamp "25" markings for freight money fees. Both letters were also missent to Glasgow.

Letter prepaid 25¢ inland fee to New York (upper right) plus 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship (upper left). Letter intended for steamship President but arrived in New York too late for this vessel. New York marked handstamp "TOO LATE" and placed letter on next sailing packet to Liverpool, where postage due of 8d marked with handstamp for an incoming ship letter.

1846 (Mar. 6) Charleston, S.C. to London, England, folded letter with red "Herckenrath Lowndes & Co." oval handstamp (Charleston forwarders) used as corner card, red "Charleston S.C. Mar 6" cds and matching "Paid" "10" handstamps, red manuscript "12½" prepaid rating for sailing ship freight money fee, carried by Kermit Line Waterloo from New York Mar. 14 to Liverpool arriving Apr. 16, Liverpool Ship (4.16) and London (4.17) backstamps, manuscript "8" pence due rating for uniform ship fee, Very Fine and attractive, Charleston freight money covers are uncommon and those by sailing ship are scarce.

1840 (May 29) Gardiner, Me. to London, England, folded letter with red "Gardiner Me. May 29" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp. with manuscript "Paid to New York 18¾/Paid to Steamboat Postage 25/ 43¾" rating, New York red "Too Late" h.s., carried by Swallowtail George Washington from New York June 7 to Liverpool arriving July 1, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" and London (7.2) backstamps, manuscript "8" pence, Very Fine, Only cover recorded from Gardiner, Maine showing freight money fee.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Letter prepaid 18¾¢ inland fee to New York plus 25¢ freight money fee for the steamship British Queen. Letter arrived in New York just after the 1 June 1840 sailing of British Queen. New York marked TOO LATE to explain the delay in handling and sent letter on next available sailing packet. Difference between 25¢ steamship and 12½¢ sailing ship freight money fees probably returned to Gardiner postmaster, the normal practice of the New York postmaster.

1845 (Apr. 12) Hartford, Ct. to Paris, France redirected to Milan, Lombardy-Venetia, folded letter with distinctive pointing hand "Paid" handstamp in red of Hartford, the freight money fee of 25¢ and the inland fee of 12½¢ must have been paid at Hartford, although not marked on letter, carried by Great Western on 36th return from New York Apr. 24 to Liverpool arriving May 8, Liverpool Ship (5.9) and red London (5.10) backstamps, matching red "Colonies/&.Art. 12" framed h.s., red French entry cds with manuscript "15" decimes due rating, forwarded to Milan with "41" crazie due rating, Milan (5.17) arrival backstamp, F.-V.F., Only recorded freight money cover from Hartford.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

London marked red, boxed COLONIES/&cART.12. accountancy marking to show that letter was unpaid and sent to France under letter bill accounting article 12, which required France pay U.K. 3 shilling 4 pence per 30 grams of bulk letter weight. Paris marked letter for 15 decimes postage due, 10 decimes payback to U.K. and 5 decimes French internal postage. Letter redirected to Milan, where it was marked for 41 krCM postage due.
