Transatlantic Mail to Italy

Lot 490    

1847 (May 18) New Orleans, La. to Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia, folded letter from the Sardinian consul in New Orleans to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sardinia, with "New Orleans La. May 18" cds with "Paid" and "10" rating h.s., carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Boston Jun. 1 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 13, London (6.14) backstamp and "Detained for Postage" framed h.s., manuscript "2/3" prepaid rating after postage remitted, Boulogne (7.12) entry cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

London marked letter "Detained for Postage" and then "Returned for 2/3 Postage" to be paid before the letter would be forwarded beyond England. A notice was sent to New Orleans for the 2/3d owed. About four weeks later the payment was received and London forwarded letter, marking red oval P F to show letter paid to Sardinian frontier. Rate to Sardinian frontier through France included 1/- transatlantic packet fee plus 5d British transit and 10d French transit fees. No postage due was required since letter sent to government official.

1847 (Jun. 14) New York to Leghorn (Livorno), Tuscany, folded letter sent privately to ship bag in Boston, carried by Cunard Line Hibernia from Boston Jun. 16 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 28, red London (6.29) backstamp and matching "Colonies/&c. Art. 13." accountancy h.s., red Boulogne (7.1) entry cds, Livorno (8.8) arrival backstamp with manuscript "30" crazie due rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The letter bill accounting changed from Article 12 to Article 13 in early 1846.

Lot 492    

1847 (Jul. 23) New Orleans, La. to Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia, folded letter from the Sardinia Consul in New Orleans to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sardinia, blue "New Orleans La. Jul 24" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rating h.s., since a contract mail steamer had just left for Liverpool from Boston (1 August 1847), the New York postmaster put letter on a sailing packet to Liverpool, carried by Black Ball Line Isaac Wright from New York Aug. 2 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 30, Very Fine, Only one other letter in this correspondence has been recorded that was sent by sailing ship to England.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

London marked letter "Detained for Postage" and the amount to be paid before the letter would be forwarded beyond England, 1s11d (8d incoming ship fee plus 1s3d for a ½ oz. letter to be sent through France to the Sardinian border). Rate to Sardinia through France from London was 5d British transit and 10d French transit fees. No postage due was required since letter sent to government official.

1847 (Aug. 26) New Orleans, La. to Turin, Sardinia, blue folded letter with blue "New Orleans, La. Aug 28" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rate markers, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Boston Sep. 16 to Liverpool arriving Sep. 29, red London (9.28) backstamp with red "Detained for Postage" framed h.s., 2s1d paid with red manuscript "2/1" rating plus London paid (10.2) cds and "PD" oval h.s., red Boulogne (10.4) entry cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter written by the Sardinian consul in New Orleans to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of Sardinia. London marked letter "Detained for Postage" and the amount to be paid before the letter would be forwarded beyond England. Since letter was posted in London three days after it was detained, the transit fees must have been collected by a Sardinian consul in London. Rate to Sardinia through France included 1 shilling transatlantic packet fee plus 5d British transit and 8d French and Sardinian transit fees. No postage due was required since letter sent to government official.

1850 (Nov. 19) New Orleans La. to Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia, folded letter with red "New Orleans La. Nov 21" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with manuscript "41" cent rating, additional red "New-Orleans La. Paid" circular h.s., red manuscript "36" cent credit to G.B., carried by Cunard Line Niagara from New York Dec. 4 to Liverpool arriving Dec. 17, red London (12.18) transit and oval "PP" h.s., Calais transit, Very Fine, this is the only recorded example of the 41¢ rate to Italy.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter prepayment included all transit fees to French-Kingdom of Sardinia border under 1843 Anglo-French convention. Since letter addressed to Minister of Foreign Affairs, no postage was due in Turin. Unrecorded New Orleans marking in red, "NEW-ORLEANS La./ PAID," the meaning of which is not understood since a separate PAID handstamp was also struck.

1851 (Jul. 7) Roxbury, Mass. to Rome, Papal States, folded letter with red "Paid" h.s., carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Jul. 9 to Liverpool arriving Jul. 20, red London (7.21) backstamp and matching "Colonies/&.Art. 13" framed accountancy h.s., red Calais (7.22) transit cds, Rome arrival backstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

London debited France under letter bill accounting article 13 for 3s4d/30 grams bulk letter rate and applied COLONIES/&c.ART.13 handstamp (very late use of marking, which was discontinued on 31 July 1851). French marked letter weight of 8 grams and two letter rates required. Letter marked for 34 crazie due in Livorno. At Rome this was crossed thru and letter marked for 2x42 (27 bajocchi plus 15 bajocchi local fee) = 84 bajocchi postage due.

1855 (Jan. 16) New York, N.Y. to Livorno, Tuscany, folded letter with red "New-York Br. Pkt. Jan 16" exchange cds and pencil "35" prepaid rating, New York large red "12" cent credit h.s. to Prussia, carried by Cunard Line Asia from Boston Jan. 17 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 30, red Aachen (2.2) backstamp and matching "Franco" h.s., Livorno (2.8) arrival backstamp and manuscript "12" crazie due h.s., Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The 35¢ prepayment for the PCM rate was hastily marked in pencil across center of letter. New York used large "12" handstamp to show credit to Prussia. Aachen marked 2 silbergroschen in bright blue ink to show that postage beyond the German-Austrian Postal Union was paid; however, this did not pay the postage to the Tuscany destination.

1856 (Jan. 14) New York, N.Y. to Florence, Italy, folded letter with "N.York Br. Pkt. '23' Jan 15" debit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Jan. 16th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 27th, Aachen (1.29) backstamp and blue "38" kr. debit, Florence (2.4) arrival backstamp with red manuscript "30" crazie due rating, Very Fine, Prussian Closed Mail covers to Tuscany are uncommon.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Aachen marked 38 kreuzer (Austrian) as the debit to Austria for the international rate of 30¢. Transit through Switzerland added 3 kr.(A) for a total Austrian debit of 41 kr.(A) which was passed on to the Kingdom of Sardinia. This was equivalent to 26 crazie in Tuscany to which 4 crazie transit was added. Total postage due marked in red pen was 30 crazie.

1856 (Aug. 18) Washington, D.C. to Spezia, Sardinia, cover with "Washington D.C. Aug 18" cds and red "Paid" h.s., black "N. York Br. Pkt. '23' Aug 20" debit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York on Aug. 20th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 31st, Aachen (9.2) and Genoa (9.7) backstamps, Genoa added postage due label, Spezia (9.8) arrival backstamp; Very Fine and unusual, letters with original Sardinian postage due labels are very scarce.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Washington, D.C.'s faint PAID handstamp not seen by New York and letter sent unpaid in the Prussian Closed Mails. Aachen marked 45 kreuzer debit in bright blue and sent letter thru Baden and Switzerland to Milan, Austrian Lombardy. Aachen debit in error and was properly 38 Austrian kreuzer. Milan struck VIA DI SVIZERRA to show letter arrived via Switzerland, added 3 kreuzer Swiss transit, and debited Sardinia 48 Austrian kreuzer. Genoa added pink postage due label which showed 2.29 Lira due in Spezia.

Jan 6" exchange cds with pencil "5" cent prepaid rating, London (1.19) backstamp with "GB/1F60c" accountancy h.s., carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Jan. 7 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 18, Livorno (1.27) backstamp with manuscript "19" crazie postage due, Very Fine, a scarce three month period use to Italy.
