1858 (May 8) Port Louis, Mauritius to Boston, Mass., folded letter with "Packet Letter, Mauritius, MY 10 1858" backstamp with manuscript "2" pence debit rating to G.B., London (6.12) backstamp and manuscript "24" cent debit to U.S., carried by Vanderbilt Line Ariel from Southampton June 16 to New York arriving Jun. 29, "New York Am. Packet Jun 30" and matching "45" cent due h.s., F.-V.F., a scarce letter from Mauritius to the U.S.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried by P&O steamers "Azof" to Aden, "Nemesis" to Suez, "Colombo" to Malta, and "Panther" to Marseille. British debit to U.S. included 2x3d = 6d to France and 6d to G.B. (12d or 24¢). U.S. entitled to 16¢ sea postage from England plus 5¢ U.S. postage for total postage due of 45¢.
