1838-1848 U.S-Great Britain Mails - Sailing Packets, group of 4 stampless covers comprising 1838 Scotland to Auburn N.Y. by Black Ball Line "Oxford", 1838 Philadelphia to London by Kermit Line "Sheffield", 1838 Canada to London by Swallowtail Line "Wellington", and York Pa. to Liverpool by Enoch Train's Line "Robert C. Winthrop"; F.-V.F., a scarce group.

1840-1848 U.S.-Great Britain Mails - Pre-1848 Treaty by British Contract Steamships, collection balance of 93 stampless covers carried mostly by Cunard Line steamers, mail includes various transit mail from/to Austria, Germany with Württemberg, Hesse, Berlin etc., Canada, Mexico, better includes 1840 Liverpool to New York carried by Britannia on the 2nd voyage and third of the RMSPC Line, 1841 Vera Cruz, Mexico to London via New York, 1842 from Richmond with typical freight money "Ship" backstamp but no rating, 1842 from Philadelphia to England with "Custom-House Philada" backstamp, 1846 Hesse to Louisville Ky. forwarded with blue cds and "Forwarded" straightline, many different rate markings, F.-V.F.

1848 U.S.-Great Britain Mails, Retaliatory Rates, group of 10 inbound and outbound covers comprising the following sailings: sixth, seventh, ninth (2), 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 21st, some better including one from Germany, double rates from Glasgow and London, a triple rate from London, some faults, F.-V.F., a scarce group.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

During the Retaliatory Rate period the New York Foreign Mail Office treated incoming prepaid mail as Ship Letters. The packet rate of 24 cents was charged plus the appropriate inland rate with the New York Ship Letter arrival stamp applied. This policy was applied to letters originating in Britain and to European mails which transitted Britain.

1848-1849 U.S.-Great Britain Mails, Restored Rates, group of 7 covers to the U.S. during the restored rate period comprising three of the four sailings: second (four), third (two) and fourth (one), F.-V.F., a scarce group.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

In December 1848 a treaty was negotiated restoring the conditions prior the the Retaliatory Rate period. The treaty was not ratified by Congress until February 1849 and the three sailings by Cunard before ratification are known as the Restored Period. The first sailing under the new treaty was from Boston by the "Niagara" on 21st February 1849.

1849-1867 U.S.-Great Britain Mails - 1848 Treaty by British Contract Steamships, collection balance of 122 stampless covers showing the wide range of rate markings and Cunard Line steamship sailings, better includes 1849 from Malaga, Spain to Boston with "Consulate U.S." forwarding h.s., various origin/destinations including India, Wurttemberg, Baden, Prussia, Netherlands, Saxony, France, etc., a wide variety of ratings and routings, also included are three covers from the 1868 Treaty period carried by British Contract Steamships, F.-V.F., any better covers present and should be viewed to fully appreciate the immense amount of material.

1849-1868 U.S.-Great Britain Mails - 1848 Treaty by American Contract Steamships, collection balance of 80 stampless covers showing the wide range of rate markings and steamships, range of origins include Austria, Brazil, Bremen two from India, Portugal, Hamburg, plus transit mail like 1855 London to Canada via New York and two 1857 letters from Cuba to Denmark via N.Y. and London, also some destinations like 1857 Boston to Hong Kong (top edge flaws); also includes a couple 1867-68 covers from the new treaty, F.-V.F., an interesting basis for further study with many better covers present.
