Lot 141    

1850 (Jul. 6) New York, N.Y. to Batavia, Dutch East Indies, folded letter with small red "Viâ SOUTHAMPTON" endorsement h.s. carried by Collins Line Pacific from New York Jul. 6 to Liverpool arriving Jul. 17, red "London Paid 19 Jul 1850" datestamp with red manuscript "1/4" 1s4d prepaid rating to Batavia, manuscript "160" Dutch Cents due rating, Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried in parcel on "Pacific" and did not enter mails until posted by London agent. Viâ SOUTHAMPTON handstamp in red applied by forwarding agent as a private marking to show desired routing of letter. Marking probably that of Baring Brothers in London. Letter traveled by P&O steamers "Indus", "Haddington", and "Achilles" to Singapore.

Lot 142    

1855 (Jul. 21) New York, N.Y. to Canton, China, folded letter with red "New-York Am. Packet Jul 25" exchange cds with pencil "53" cent prepayment and red "32" credit h.s. to G.B., carried by Collins Line Pacific from New York July 25 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 5, London Paid (8.6) transit, Hong Kong (9.22) arrival backstamp; light hor. fold, Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Payment was for ½ oz. letter by British open mail via Marseille. New York used orange red handstamp to show 32¢ credit to the United Kingdom. Letter carried by P&O steamers "Valetta" from Marseille to Alexandria, "Hindostan" from Suez to Galle, Ceylon, and "Ganges" from Galle to Hong Kong, then by P&O river boat to Canton. Letter reached addressee on September 25, 1855, two months after being written.

1856 (May 23) Boston, Mass. to Canton, China, folded letter with red "Boston Paid Am. Pkt. May 23" cds with pencil "43" cent prepayment for single British treaty rate via Marseille, carried by Collins Line Atlantic from New York May 24 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 4, red crayon "22" cent credit to G.B., red London "Paid 5 JU" transit, Hong Kong (7.25) transit backstamp; small flaw, clean and Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Prepayment written in pencil underneath the red crayon 22¢ credit to G.B. London placed letter in closed mail bag and sent it to France to catch P&O steamer "Valetta" for transit to Alexandria. P&O steamers "Nubia" and "Singapore" carried letter from Suez to Galle, Ceylon and from Galle to Hong Kong.

1857 (Nov. 17) Haverhill, Mass. to Singapore, cover with red manuscript "Haverhill Mass, Nov. 17 - 1857" postmark and matching "Paid 30 cts" rating, "Boston Br. Pkt. Nov 18" exchange backstamp with red crayon "27" cent credit to France, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston Nov. 18 to Liverpool arriving Nov. 29, red French (11.30) entry cds, letter carried in closed bag from Marseille to destination on P&O Steamships to Alexandria, and from Suez via Aden, Ceylon and Penang; Very Fine.

1857 (Nov. 24) Philadephia, Pa. to Singapore, Straits Settlements, light buff cover with red "Philadelphia Pa. Nov 24" cds with matching "Paid 30" prepaid h.s., endorsed "per Overland Mail via 'Galle' Ceylon", carried by Cunard Line Arabia from New York Nov. 25 to Liverpool arriving Dec. 6, French (12.7) entry cds with "P.D." framed h.s., Marseille (9.11) backstamp, couple flap tears, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Philadelphia exchange office used "PAID/30" handstamp to show prepayment but failed to indicate 27¢ credit to France in accordance with the treaty. Letter carried by P&O steamer "Vectis" from Marseille to Alexandria, unidentified P&O steamer from Suez to Galle, and P&O steamer "Ganges" from Galle to Singapore. Letter was 66 days in transit to Singapore.

1858 (Sep. 28) Boston, Mass. to Padang, Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, cover with "Boston Br. Pkt. Sep 28" backstamp, red "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "5" cent rating, red "New-York Br. Pkt. Nov 10" cds, carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York Sep. 29 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 10, London (10.11) backstamp, red "Insufficiently Pre-Paid" and "Returned for Postage" framed h.s., various manuscript ratings, Very Fine, a rare letter to Sumatra.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter originally paid 5¢ for British open mail rate to Penang, Straits Settlements and marked for Marseille route. London marked 1s7d debit to Penang and then realized letter addressed to Padang, Dutch East Indies for which postage had to be prepaid. London debited U.S. 16¢ for transatlantic fee to return letter, which was sent back to Boston for proper postage. Letter prepaid 33¢ in Boston for Southampton route to Dutch East Indies. New York credited 28¢ to U.K. Letter carried three times across the Atlantic by the Cunard Persia. Letter subsequently carried by P&O steamers Ceylon to Alexandria, Simla to Ceylon, and Pekin to Singapore. Dutch N.I.S.M. steamer Koningen den Nederlanden carried it to Dutch East Indies. Postage due was 30 doit or 25 Dutch Cents.

1859 (Feb. 20) Baltimore, Md. to Hong Kong, China, folded letter endorsed "Via Marseilles" and with "Baltimore Md. Feb 20 1860" cds, red "Paid" h.s. and red crayon "5", "Boston Br. Pkt. Feb 22" backstamp, London backstamp and manuscript "1/8" 1s8d debit to Hong Kong, Hong Kong (4.22) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter endorsed for British route via Marseille. London debit consisted of 8d transatlantic, 6d British transit, and 6d French transit fees. British had not yet started 1d colonial credit to Hong Kong so full 1s8d debited. Letter carried by P&O steamers "Valetta" from Marseilles to Alexandria, "Nubia" from Suez to Galle, Ceylon, and "Singapore" from Galle to Hong Kong.

1854 (Dec. 5) Manila, Philippine Islands to Boston, Mass., folded letter with "Viâ Marseilles" routing handstamp, Singapore and London (1.30) backstamps, manuscript "60" G.B. debit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Canada from Liverpool Feb. 4 to Boston arriving Feb. 18, "Boston Br. Pkt. Feb. 18" exchange backstamp, 65¢ postage due (not shown), Very Fine.

Letter sent to Singapore to connect with P&O steamships Malta to Ceylon, Bentinck to Suez, and Valetta from Alexandria to Marseille. "Viâ Marseilles" a routing handstamp of the letter originator, Russell & Sturgis of Manila. Boston neglected to mark postage due.

1856 (Dec. 14) Hong Kong, China to Boston, Mass. via London, folded letter with "Hong Kong 14 DE 1856" origin backstamp, London (1.29) backstamp and manuscript "74" cents debit rating to U.S., carried by Europa from Liverpool Jan. 31 to Boston arriving Feb. 15, "Boston Br. Pkt. 16 Feb" exchange backstamp and "84" cent due rating handstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter carried from Hong Kong by P&O steamers "Norna" to Galle, Ceylon and "Alma" from Galle to Suez. After crossing overland to Alexandria, P&O steamer "Valetta" carried letter to Marseille. Letter weighed between ½ - ¾ ounce. New rates became effective on 1 January 1857 as a result of a new convention between G.B. and France.

1857 (Oct. 4) Hong Kong, China to Haverhill, Mass., folded letter endorsed "overland via Marseilles", "Hong Kong 4 OC 1857" backstamp, red London (11.28) backstamp and manuscript "24" cent debit to U.S., carried by North Star from Southampton Dec. 2 to New York arriving Dec. 19, black "New York '45' Dec 19" exchange due cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried from Hong Kong to Suez by P&O steamer "Norna" with an "extra" mail (not the regularly scheduled mail). After transit overland to Alexandria, it was carried by French steamer "Jourdain" to Marseille, then overland to Paris, Calais, cross channel to Dover, and London.
