Singer & Co's/Feather River/Express/Connecting with/Wells, Fargo & Co, beautiful strike of blue oval handstamp on 1854 folded letter to Bidwells Bar, Cal., red "Farmington, Iowa, May 10" cds with matching "10" rating handstamp, pencil "Smiths Bar", with long contents and two sight drafts; some staining, Fine and scarce.

Four page contents from Drummond's wife who has just learned that her husband Thomas Drummond has died. She is writing back to Samuel O. Hughs hoping there is some mistake.She wonders why her husband sent no letters about his impending death since he apparently knew his health had changed for some time. She says, "I wonder if it was his fate to die far away from his old friends and relatives in the prime of life with all his bright dreams of the future unrealized…".

Swift & Co.'s Express, Santa Rosa, blue oval handstamp on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt paste-up entire to San Francisco, ornamental company frank at top, in combination with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express, Petaluma" oval handstamp; both covers with expertly repaired reductions at right, 3¢ entire with portion of indicia added and small portion of handstamp drawn, Very Fine appearance, a rare conjunctive usage.
