Manitou Colo., 7/30, 1873 manuscript postmark on cover to Colorado Springs, franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote, Very Fine, rare with only a few territorial manuscript postmarks known from Manitou.

Lot 759    

Mill City, Colorado, Aug 15/67, neat manuscript postmark at left of cover to Philadelphia, Pa., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose; small tear in stamp, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Mill City was an important smelter town and stagecoach stop. The post office became Dumont in 1879, after the territorial period.

Mill City, Col. Ty., Mar 13, cds and matching target handstamp canceling on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to Philadelphia, Pa., ca. 1870 usage, Very Fine.

Lot 761    

Missouri City, Kans, May 18, cds with matching "Paid" in oval handstamp on 1861 cover to Winterport, Me.; slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, a rare short-lived "Kans" designation postmark.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The postmaster at Missouri City was another, who when ordering a handstamp, apparently wrongly guessed that the area would remain a part of Kansas. By the June of 1861, the "Kans" portion of this device was chiseled out of the postmark while awaiting the new "C.T." postmark.

Lot 762    

Montezuma, Col., 14/10/75, manuscript postmark just tying 1873, 3¢ green on cover to St. Louis, Mo., receiving backstamp; minor cover edge staining at top, otherwise Very Fine, a very rare territorial postmark from Montezuma, quite possibly unique as no postmarks have been recorded from this office during the territorial period.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lot 763    

Montgomery City, C.T., Dec 4, cds with matching target tying 1861, 3¢ rose on cover to Miwensville, Pa., with original 1864 enclosure, cover with small edge flaws and partial backflap, F.-V.F., gold was discovered here in 1859, and the boom reached its peak in 1861.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Montgomery City was a boom town that went bust when the gold played out. Despite its brief importance, covers (all territorial) are quite scarce. The office closed in 1872.

Lot 764    

Monument, Col., Aug 24, cds on fresh cover to Providence, R.I., franked with 3¢ Banknote tied by target handstamp, with original enclosure datelined "Southwater, Aug 22ond, 1875", Very Fine, the only recorded territorial postmark from this town.

Mount Vernon, Col., Aug 2, blue cds with matching grid handstamp tying 1874, 3¢ green (s.e. at left) on cover to Columbus, O.; some light cover toning at left, otherwise Very Fine, while not a confirmed territorial usage, this is still the only surviving example of a postmark from Mount Vernon.

Lot 766    

Mountain City C.T., Nov 27 (1861), manuscript postmark and cancel on 1860, 3¢ Star Die entire to Strasburgh, Pa., Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

It is known that the Mountain City post office had moved to Central City several years before the official change in name. The site of the first gold discovery, on the north fork of clear Creek, became Mountain City. It was soon overshadowed by its neighbors Central City and Black Hawk Point.

Mountain City, C.T., Feb 2, 1862, cds on cover to Iowa, frank ed with 1861, 1¢ blue, horizontal pair and single canceled by circle of wedges cancels; cover with vertical slit and a bit reduced at right, F.-V.F.
