Lot 820    

(Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Railroad) A.T. & S.F., R.R., May 9, cds (911-A-1, rarity IV) with matching negative "E" handstamp on 1¢ postal card to New York City, reverse with railroad printed form message datelined "Granada, Col., May 9th, 1874", Very Fine and rare, a very scarce territorial usage.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

In 1873, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Railroad entered Colorado Territory, reaching the site of Granada in the eastern Arkansas Valley. This card was sent during the time that railroad construction had halted there to await additional financing.

(Cheyenne, Hughes & Denver) Chey., Hughes & Den., Agt., Jul 3, full bold cds on 1880 cover to East Homer, N.Y., franked with 1873, 3¢ green tied by cork handstamp, with "Colorado House, In The Railroad Block, Greeley, Colorado" corner card, statehood usage, with original enclosure, Very Fine, a choice strike of this railroad postmark.

(Denver & Georgetown) Den. & Georgetown, Agt., Jan 25, clear full cds (952-A-1, rarity V) on 1883, 2¢ brown entire to Watertown, N.Y., Georgetown, Col. corner card, statehood usage; couple small tears at left, Very Fine, a very scarce railroad agent marking.

(Denver & Leadville) Denv. & Leadville, Agt., May 11, 1884, cds (954-A-2, rarity V) with matching cork handstamp canceling 2¢ red brown on cover to Malden, Mass., statehood usage, Very Fine and scarce.

Lot 824    

(Denver & Rio Grande Railroad) D. & Rio Grande, partial strike of circular handstamp (Towle 953-H-1, rarity X) with second strike canceling on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Grand Rapids, Mich., manuscript Atherton Farm, Colo., Aug 31, 1873 pencil docketing at upper left; reduced at left and small stain at top, F.-V.F., this is the only recorded example of this railroad postmark used during the territorial period.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

In 1871, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad began construction southward, reaching the site of Colorado Springs in October of that year. From Denver to Colorado Springs the railroad followed one of the older routes, creating new towns along the way and occasionally providing railroad access for the existing stage stations and rest stops.

(Denver Pacific) Den. Pacific R.P.O., May 29, cds and negative star duplex canceling on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Oskaloosa, Iowa, 1871 year docketing at left; light staining at upper left and missing most of backflap, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Chartered in the fall of 1867, on June 24, 1870, the Denver Pacific was the first railroad to reach Denver. This provided a rail connection to the Union Pacific at Cheyenne, Wyoming.

(Kansas City & Pueblo) Kan. City & Pueblo R.P.O., 22 Nov, 1875, cds and cork handstamp tying 1873, 3¢ green on Pueblo corner card cover to Lake City, Col.; stamp with crease and cover reduced at right, F.-V.F., a scarce territorial railroad usage.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Missouri Pacific Railroad entered Colorado from Kansas and followed a route westward through Sheridan Lake, then southwestward to the Arkansas River, near Nepesta, and finally to Pueblo.

Boulder & Den, Agt." cds (951-B-1, rarity IV), "Chey., Hughes & Den., Agt." cds discovery copy (950-C-1, rarity IV), 1884 "Den. & Georgetown, Agt" cds (952-A-1, rarity V), 1898 Denver & Grand Junction R.P.O. on stamp collar cover, 1883 Den. Pueb. & Lead., Agt. cds (953-D-1, rarity IV) on Denver & Rio Grande Railway corner card cover, choice strike of 1887 Denver & So. Pueblo, R.P.O. (955-H-1), 1880's Ft. Collins & Den. R.P.O. (951-A-1), 1888 Pueb. & Silver., R.P.O. (955-C-2), 1890-1908 Pueblo Transfer Clerk cds's, also an 1897 Denver and Rio Grande Express bill of lading and dozens of 1930-40's R.P.O. cuts; condition varied, generally F.-V.F.
