(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, full margins to just in at bottom, tied by bold "Paid" in grid on 1854 folded cover from London, England to Boston, Mass., London (11.3.1854) original datestamp, London "19/Cents" debit h.s. to U.S. and black "Br. Packet Boston '24' Nov 17" exchange cds crossed out when remailed to Kennebunkport, Me. with 3¢ and red "Boston '3cts' 21 Nov" cds, reverse with manuscript "Forwarded by N. & C. N. Daner Co." forwarder's endorsement, Very Fine, A scarce usage of the 3¢ 1851 issue on cover originating in London and remailed by a Boston forwarder.

(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, strip of three, large to enormous margins except cut into at top right, used with 1851, 1¢ blue, type II, large margins on three sides, just in at left, all tied by "Sacramento Cal./Feb 19 1857" c.d.s. on 10¢ green on buff entire (U16) to Springfield, Mass.; small cover tear at top between stamp and indicia, 1¢ sealed tear., Fine, a scarce transcontinental double rate usage.

(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, two vertical pairs and two singles, tied by light strikes of "Charleston S.C. '3 Paid' Feb 9" cds on buff cover to Mexico City, Mexico, partial Vera Cruz transit cds, bold "4" reales due handstamp, small faults with back re-attached, Very Fine appearing, ex-Emerson.

The 18¢ in postage apparently underpays double the 10¢ rate to Mexico.

(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, position 4R2L, margins to slightly in, light corner creases, tied by light blue "Ship, Jun 13" cds (slightly overstruck) on 1853 cover to Georgetown, D.C., manuscript "4" due rating, original enclosed letter with "U.S. Ship Vincennes, Lynnhaven Bay, June 11th 1853" dateline written by a seaman heading for the Far East and addressed to his wife, some soiling and opened at right, Fine and very unusual ship usage.
Scott No. 11A    Estimate $300 - 400.

The 3¢ stamp together with 4¢ due make a 7¢ ship rate. This 7¢ represents 5¢ for an unpaid letter and 2¢ ship fee. The 3¢ stamp was recognized, but the letter was considered as unpaid when the rate was applied. Lynnhaven is near Norfolk, Va. Includes 1976 article by Wierenga concerning this cover and a typed transcription of the letter.

(Usages) 3¢ Dull Red, Type II, Block of 4, margins ample to just shaving frameline at lower right, tied by straight line "Way" handstamps on deposition cover to New Orleans, La. with portion of Baltimore, Md. cameo corner card on backflap, 1853 docketing at center; cover flaws including reductions at sides and refolded at top, F.-V.F., a rare quadruple rate "Way" usage; with 2003 P.F. certificate.
