Hawaii, Advertised, Unclaimed and Dead Letter Office, very fine strikes of all three markings in black (MH 751, 767 & 754, respectively) on local Honolulu cover, franked with 1894 1¢ yellow tied by Honolulu, H.I., Feb 25 duplex postmark, Advertised cds on reverse, Lorrin A. Thurston corner card, Very Fine, a scarce combination of markings, the advertised and dead letter office postmarks are unlisted in black.

Hawaii, Collection 2:05 P.M., purple straight line handstamp (MH 752 var.) on reverse of cover to Papaikou, Hawaii, franked with 1894, 2¢ brown tied by "Honolulu, H.I., Jan 6, 1898" duplex postmark, reverse with partial "Papaikou, Hawaii" receiving cds (255.01, scarcity 4); cover and stamp with small nick at right, otherwise Very Fine, this being The Only Example of This Auxiliary Collection Handstamp Bearing a "2:05 P.M." Date; with 2003 H.P.S. certificate.
Scott No. 75    Estimate $300 - 400.

According to Fred Gregory's website Post Office in Paradise, this collection mark is known bearing either a 9:25A.M. or a 3:20P.M. date. This marking with a 2:05P.M. date is the first one to be recognized.

Is., Oct 4, 1887, blue corner card date stamp on cover to North Kohala, franked with 1886, 2¢ rose canceled by purple target handstamp, no postal date stamp indicating the Department of Education date stamp was excepted as a postmark, Very Fine and unusual.

Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii, Sept 14, 1843, dateline on lengthy 3½ page letter from D.B. Lyman to Newton Falls, Ohio, entered the U.S. mails after almost 7 months with red "Fairhaven, Mass.Apr 5" entry cds, partial matching "Ship" handstamp and "27" rate, letter with important political content regarding British control and independence of the islands in part…In July or Aug 1842 commissioners were sent by the Hawaiian government to meet with the governments of the U.S. & of the principle powers of Europe with a view to secure the independence of the Islands. Soon after, the British Consul left secretly for England, leaving his deputy, a sworn enemy to this Govtabout the middle of Feby 1843 H.B.M. Ship Carysfort R't Hon. Lord George Paulet arrived & after some strange movements, quite in the style of the British Consul who had left, made such demands & enforced them in such a manner that the King & his executive consul thought it best to surrender all provisionallyThe 6th of July, the U.S. Frigate Constellation arrived. The commander Commodore Kearny protested against the cession of the Islands to the British crown, announcing his determination to hold Kamehameha III & Lord George Paulet responsible for all that American interests might suffer in consequence of it. He also raised the Hawaiian flag & saluted the native authorities under it when they visited him on board his ship; some splitting along folds, otherwise Very Fine, a wonderful letter Detailing the Events of Provisional Cession and the Occupational Government Formed By Lord George Paulet While Attempting To Annex Hawaii To the United Kingdom.

Hawaii, Hilo, H.I., Post Office, Aug, 1880, full clear cds (MH 238.02) on "F" monogram cover to Honolulu, franked with 1875, 2¢ brown tied by Hilo square grid handstamp, "Honolulu, H.I., May 5" cds with matching target handstamp additionally tying stamp; cover with a few repaired insect holes, otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 798    

Hawaii, Honolulu Oahu, Feby 19, 1827, dateline on lengthy 3½ page folded letter written by Levi Chamberlain to his niece Sarah Nichols in Boston regarding the news of her father's death, entered in mails in Boston with red "Ship 6" fancy arch in ribbon handstamp; some edge wear and splitting along outer folds, F.-V.F., a scarce early letter from Honolulu.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Levi Chamberlain was an unmarried missionary member of the Second Company which sailed from New Haven, Connecticut, November 20, 1822, ship "Thames", Captain Clasby, and arrived at Honolulu, April 27, 1823, a voyage of 158 days. He was made Superintendent of Secular Affaires for the Mission. As a missionary teacher he made three early tours of Oahu afoot, kept a day school, and taught classes twice a week attended by teachers who wished to better qualify themselves in reading and writing. In spite of ill health, he worked tirelessly for the cause of the Mission and probably no man lived in the islands who was more generally respected and beloved.

Hawaii, Honolulu, Oahu, Sandwich Islands (Barque "Clement"), Oct 3rd 1848, dateline on privately carried 3 page folded letter addressed to Whitehall in London, England from crew member on the barque Clement on the return voyage to New London, Ct., interesting letter written to his friends due to reading about them in a local Honolulu newspaper, with front of letter endorsed "Sandwich Islands, Oct 3, 1848"; some minor edge toning, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.
