San Mateo, Cal. Application For Post Office and Postmaster, 1855 letter sent from P.M. General Horatio King to J.W. Denver regarding the appointment of postmaster and the establishment of a post office in San Mateo, mentions the changing of the Belmont office to San Mateo, cover with straight line "Post Office Department, Official Business" handstamp, Very Fine.

The San Mateo Post Office officially opened on October 12th, 1857.

Saucelito, Novr 8th / (18)51 (Marin), stampless folded letter to Sonora Tuolumne County with dateline "U.S. Steamer Massachusetts Saucelito Novr 8th / 51", which received postmark at San Francisco 12 Nov and handstamp "5" (unpaid rate), Very Fine, quite possible the earliest usage, the Saucelito post office was not established until 1870.

(Tuolumne), group of six covers comprising of a 1852 cover with #11A vertical pair to Albion N.Y., 1853 cover with #11A hor. pair to Surry Me., #11A pair with red cancels and matching cds to Albion N.Y., 1853 stampless with "Paid" and "3" rating h.s., 1850s stampless Coventry N.Y. to Sonora and forwarded, and 1850s stampless to Kalamazoo Mich. and forwarded; some faults, Fine group.
