Hale & Co., 1844 (6¢) Red on Bluish, margins at left and bottom, clear at top and just touched at right, intense color, manuscript "AB" (Amos Bates, Hale's agent) control mark, cancelled by manuscript "X", clear strike of red "Forwarded by Hale & Co., from New Bedford" oval handstamp and matching "Paid"on Dec. 18th 1844 folded letter to Springfield Mass., stamp tied by "Hale & Co., Boston" oval handstamp with additional strike at center; top corner slightly affected from edge placement, vertical file fold does not appear to affect stamp, Very Fine.

Letter Express, 1844, 5¢ Black on Pink, Horizontal Pair, large margins to into top outerline line of right stamp, natural "pre-use" crease in bottom margin, manuscript canceled on folded letter sheet addressed to New York City, letter carried from Cleveland to New York and given to Boyd's City Express for inner-city delivery, with red boxed "Boyd's City Express Post, Aug 6, 7 o'c." handstamp tying pair with matching "Paid, J.T.B." handstamp alongside, inner sheet docketed "SB & FJ Prentiss, August 2nd 1844" who where two brothers that established a law office in Cleveland, O.; cover file fold and some edge splitting along file folds, Very Fine; with 1974 and 2007 P.F. certificates.

Metropolitan Errand and Carrier Express Co., 1855, 1¢ Red Orange, horizontal pair, large margins to in at top and bottom, tied by two strikes of "Paid" framed handstamp, and with additional strike at left on buff cover locally addressed to Charles Turner, Dep. Street Commissioner at Hall of Records, Very Fine rare usage of pair tied by handstamps.

Spaulding's Penny Post (2¢) Value Omitted Coin Handstamp, bold strike on folded letter sheet addressed to Buffalo, N.Y., red "New York, 10cts, Dec 15" integral rate cds, "Recieved Dec 16th, 1847" pencil docketing to the right of Spaulding handstamp, Very Fine, ex-Needham, Hollowbush, Petri & Hahn; signed George Sloane, with 2005 P.F. certificate.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF SPAULDING'S PENNY POST COIN HANDSTAMP WITH VALUE REMOVED.

Proprietor of Spaulding's Penny Post, Enos W. Spaulding, raised the posts letter rate on November 15th, 1847 from one to two cents. Three different Spaulding's coin handstamps are known and are all unique. The first bearing the "One Cent" value is undated but obvious was used prior to the rate change. This cover with the value removed was posted approximately one month after the rate change to two cents. A later usage of the coin handstamp in April of 1848 bears a illustrated dove at the center. Shortly thereafter, Spaulding introduced his Striding Messenger handstamp and adhesives.

Swart's City Dispatch Post, 1849-53 (2¢) Red, three margins, corner crease and tiny tear, tied by "Swarts, Post Office N.Y., Chatham Square" oval handstamp on American Sunday School Union advertising cover to local New York City street address; two small edge tears and some wear, Very Fine and attractive advertising use.
