Southern Cross of Honor Medal Application, Private David B. Wilkinson of the 3rd NC, 1911 application from claimant for the Southern Cross of Honor Medal, which was designed to be awarded to Confederate soldiers for their outstanding valor, authorized by the Confederate Congress on Oct. 13, 1862 and was intended to be the equivalent of the Union Army's Medal of Honor; accompanied by detailed Southern Cross info and images plus bio of claimant; some fold separations, Very Fine.

Lot 1941    

Tenth Missouri Regiment, 1862 cover franked with 1861 1¢ blue + 3¢ rose, both tied by strikes of "Philadelphia Pa. Aug 12 1862" cds on orange buff cover to Lt. in Tenth Missouri Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division (Pope's), Army of the Mississippi, reverse with "U.S. Penny Mail, Phila. Pa. Aug 12" octagonal datestamp and "Received, Cairo Ill. Aug 17, 1862" cds; some edge wear, Very Fine.
Scott No. 63    Estimate $100 - 150.

The 10th Missouri Regiment, which had been organized at St. Louis in August 1861, was during this time in Corinth Miss. Cover was carried by carrier service to the Philadelphia post office and then normal channels to Cairo, where it was carried by military courier to Corinth.

Lot 1942    

Union Deserter James William Stevenson, red, white and blue patriotic design showing Lady Liberty with Flag (Weiss FF-8) cover bearing 1861, 3¢ rose cancelled by grid cancel with matching "Flint Mich. Dec 2" cds, addressed to James William Stevenson's cousin, George Wallace in Joy, N.Y., the accompanying 1861 letter with patriotic letterhead showing Sitting Liberty written and signed "J.W.S.", F.-V.F.

Civil War Postal History, group of 11 covers and some other related material including three patriotics, several are addressed to soldiers including printed to R.B. Plotts of the Iron Clad Department, Navy Yard, Philadelphia, letter to Lieut. in Hammond Hospital (Ward 12, Bed 70) at Point Lookout Md., December 11th 1861 Missouri oath of allegiance, etc.; some faults, F.-V.F (no photo).

Civil War Postal History Including Patriotics, group of approx. 105 civil war era items including patriotics comprising used (26 incl. 4 fronts) and mint (56), three sanitary commission uses, some usages, and usages from Union occupied Southern states (Louisiana and Tenn.); patriotics include some better designs like "A.L., His Marque" used design in red, etc.; mixed condition, Fine.
