American Anti-Slavery Society, printed circular from the Office of the American Anti-Slavery Society to Philadelphia Pa., neat "Belleville N.J. Jan 22" cds and matching double-circle "5" rating handstamp, forwarded to New York City with partial blue Philadelphia Jan. 25 cds, the printed notice to the officers and members…"The Executive Committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society are desirous of co-operating systematically with the auxiliary societies. They believe that heretofore too little correspondence has taken place between them, and thus the efforts of each have been crippled. It seems hardly possible, that if the Executive Committee of this Society and the auxiliaries hereafter maintain a system of operations in concert, far greater results than heretofore will not ensue. It is by the efficient and ready co-operation of its auxiliaries, that this Society hopes to carry forward the arduous work it has undertaken. Alone, it can do little; but with their aid, and the blessing of God, it can do much…", Very Fine.

(Civil War Patriotic) Contraband Barricade. Come and Get Your Property., red and blue battlefield design on cover to Akron, O., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (s.e. at right) tied by "Cleveland, O., Sep 23, 1861" cds and grid handstamp canceling; slight cover reduction at right, otherwise Very Fine.

Before the Emancipation Proclamation, it was not possible to legally seize slaves from their owner in areas of the Confederacy occupied by Union armies. To avoid this problem, such slaves were declared to be contraband property under the rules of war.

(Civil War) Vicksburg, Miss. March 11th, 1864, Orders, No. 9, 4 page Union orders…"respecting the leasing of plantations within the limits of the military Division of Mississippi, and the management of the Freedmen (freed slaves) thereon,", by order of the Secretary of War, Lorenzo Thomas, Very Fine.

Lot 1963    

Descandum Kansas Improvement Company, hilarious but perhaps half-serious printed "Declaration of Sentiment and Constitution" patterned upon the Emigrant Aid Societies, in which an enterprising young man solicits the purchase of "stock" in his personal venture to emigrate to Kansas Territory, in exchange for which "each member shall have his name engraved with the largest jack-knife upon the largest tree in all of Kansas", attractive covered wagon vignette, locally mailed bearing 1851, 1¢ blue tied by grid cancel, red "Chelsea Mass. Sep 24" cds adjacent, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

"Art. 2 - The object shall be to raise funds to enable the Chaplain of Old No. 1 to visit Kansas and other places, for the purpose of civilizing and otherwise enlightening them…".

Free State Emigration, the Kansas Aid Committee, 1856 printed circular soliciting funds for the "People of Kansas…in defending themselves and their families from the unjustifiable invasions and lawless incursions and attacks of the Missouri Borderers upon their lives and liberty", entered mails with 1851, 1¢ blue tied by Albany N.Y. cds; with with light tape stain, F.-V.F.
