Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ Green, Richmond town cancels, clear to ample margins, tiny tear at top, otherwise F.-V.F.; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

Lot 2312    

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ Green, horizontal strip of three, mostly four margins, used along with 1862, 5¢ blue single, nearly four margins, all tied by two strikes of partial "Orange C.H., Va. Dec" cds with ms. "9" dating in left, on turned cover addressed to Miss. Bradford, Care of Stephen J. Nathan Esq., Treasury Department at Richmond Va., inside use bearing 1862, 5¢ blue #6, vertical pair, uncancelled and no postal markings to Mrs. Slaughter, care Dr. Slaughter at Orange C.H., Va., most likely ended up being handcarried outside the postal service; small stamp flaws, backflap missing, other three flaps reattached, Very Fine appearing; with 2007 C.S.A. certificate with no opinion on origin of inside #6 pair.
Scott No. 3 + 7    Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

A REMARKABLE COMBINATION FRANKING, THIS BEING THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF A 1862 2¢ STRIP OF THREE AND 1862 5¢ SINGLE PREPAYING THE 10¢ RATE.

There is one other example of a 1862 2¢ and 5¢ combination franking prepaying the 10¢ rate, but it has all singles. This is the only known strip in combination.

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ Green, large margins all around, bright color, tied by "Richmond Va. Oct 7, 1862" cds on locally addressed drop letter; minor restored flap and edge nick, Extremely Fine; signed by Ashbrook and Brian Green on reverse.

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ Green, full margins to just touched at right, tied by "Richmond, Va Jun 17, 1863" cds (Type 5a) on drop letter with military address to Capt A. Hardin, 4th Va Heavy Artillery in Richmond, Va.; small corner repair, F.-V.F.; with 1982 PF certificate.
Scott No. 3    $2,750.

The address is written on lined notebook paper which has been pasted over a prior address to Mr Joel Hardin but no evidence that the cover was twice postally used.

Gaddis Esqr, Richmond, Va; part of backflap missing and envelope restored under stamp, light crease across top of stamp; with 2000 CSA certificate.
