Lot 885    

"S.B. Clinton of St. Louis, April 23, 1836", dateline on folded letter to Spring Grove Ill., entered mails with "St. Louis Mo. Apr 23" cds and red manuscript "12½" rating, flap with manuscript "Spring Grove Ill, May 22d / forward" forwarding postmark and "6¼" rating totaled to "18¾", interesting content concerning senders difficult and dangerous journey that included a fight and stabbing after an attempted robbery; light soiling and wear, F.-V.F., ex-Risvold.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The "S.W. Clinton" was built at Cincinnati in 1836, and weighed 102 tons.

Sam. Ricker Jr., New Orleans, Agent of the Texian Post Office Dt., bold strike of oval handstamp on 1838 folded letter datelined "Houston Texas April 5 - 1838" to Cincinnati Oh., entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Apr 13" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with red manuscript "27" rating for 25¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine, a scarce use from Texas to Ohio.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Great content including: "You see by the date under which I write this that I am in the metropolis of the new republick… Congress will meet here and commence its session on moday next and I am anticipating the pleasure of seeing lions of the forrest republick, all in one cage before I leave here. I have every day an opportunity of seeing beasts of forrest for that appelation is aplicable in my opinion, to many beings in this country besides the four footed animals. I presume no country is populated with a more vicous kind of people than a majority of the Texians are… I deem this country the greatest hoax I have ever met with… ".

Steamboat and Ship Mails, group of over 30 covers including a couple fronts, includes 1843 St. Louis with "SB 25" rating and manuscript "Alex Scott" endorsement, couple #11 uses cancelled by "Steam 5" straightline, five 1817-1826 Hudson River "B" usages, 1813 June 5th to Rome N.Y. with Albany June 7th cds and "Ship" rating h.s., front with red "Forwarded by Watts Given & Co., Paduca Ky." oval and New Orleans "Steam 10" oval rating h.s., Mobile "Way 11" use, etc; some faults, F.-V.F (no photo).
