1867 (Jun. 24) Cincinnati, Ohio To Klein-Bottwar, Württemberg, yellow cover with printed C.F. Adae, German Consulate in Cincinnati corner card, blue "Cincinnati Jun 24" cds, carried NGL Line Weser II from New York June 27 to Bremenhaven arriving July 9, blue "American/über Bremen" two-line transit with large "22" kreuzer due h.s., clean and Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

The 22¢ rate to Württemberg by Bremen or Hamburg packet ceased in 1859. The normal 15¢ rate to the GAPU locations applied. Bremen struck the large "22" handstamp to show the postage due in kreuzer, the currency of the Southern German States.

To Paris, France, Shepard correspondence mourning cover bearing 1863, 15¢ black, tied by two strikes of cork cancel duplexed with Buffalo cds, black "Boston '6' Sep 11" debit exchange cds and matching framed "Short Paid" handstamp, red Calais (9.22) entry cds and sharp strike of black "16" decimes due handstamp, Paris (9.22) arrival backstamp, matching 1867 mourning enclosure accompanies, Very Fine and choice use, 30¢ double French Mail rate underpaid by 15¢ and treated wholly unpaid with 30¢ due, 6¢ debit for British packet service., ex-Turner.

To Paris, France, Shepard correspondence cover bearing 1863, 24¢ lilac, cancelled by cork cancel duplexed with Buffalo cds, black "Boston '6' Oct 23" debit exchange cds and matching framed "Short Paid" handstamp adjacent, red crayon "2" for double weight, red Calais (11.3) entry cds and black "16" decimes due handstamp, reverse with Paris (11.3) arrival cds and ms. due rating; cover faults, F.-V.F., 30¢ double French Mail rate underpaid by 15¢ and treated wholly unpaid with 30¢ due, 6¢ debit for British packet service., ex-Dos Passos.

1869 (Sep. 8) the Hague, Netherlands To New York, N.Y., cover with red "Gravenhage, 8 Sep 69" cds and bearing Netherlands 20c. green tied by dotted "4" lozenge, insufficiently prepaid with manuscript "20" due rating, black "New York Sep 22" cds and manuscript "17" overwritten with "20" for 8¢ due in coin = 10¢ in notes plus 5¢ fine; small edge fault just affects 20c., F.-V.F.

Lot 1010    

1869 (Sep. 23) Harrison, Tenn. To Berlin, Prussia, partial cds on cover bearing 1869, 3¢ ultramarine tied by target cancel prepaid for 3¢ domestic only via the US-NGU Convention. The New York exchange office elected to send this letter in the closed mails through England, and applied the blue crayon "4¾" Sgr debit rating (equivalent to 12¢), carried by NGL Line Hermann from New York Sep. 25th to Bremen arriving Oct. 10th, blue Coeln (5.10) entry backstamp and matching cursive "ungenügend/frankirt" (insufficiently franked) handstamp in blue, Berlin (5.10) arrival backstamp and manuscript "6¾" Sgr total due rating for deficient postage plus the 2 Sgr fine, Very Fine, A similar letter from the same correspondence is shown in Figure 9-29 on page 756 of Winter, Volume 2.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Under the US-North German Union Convention, effective 1 January 1868, the rate for ordinary letters sent from the United States to the NGU, carried in closed mails via the UK, was established at 15¢ per 15 grams. For those letters carried directly between the U.S. and the NGU, the rate was established at 10¢ per 15 grams. Insufficiently prepaid letters were charged with the deficient amount, plus a 2 Silbergroschen fine.
