Lot 1125    

(Lettersheet) Mexican Mustang Liniment, large detailed view showing wounded Spanish soldiers using liniment with Indian & buffalo in background of erupting mountains and cherub holding testament and product, on folded lettersheet datelined "St. Louis, June 14/52", sent to Springfield, Ill. franked with clear to mostly large margin 1851, 3¢ orange brown tied by neat "Saint Louis, Mo., 3, Jun 15" integral rate cds, Very Fine, a marvelous medicinal advertising lettersheet design.
Scott No. 10A    Estimate $500 - 750.

First introduced in 1825 by George W. Westbrook of St. Louis, Missouri and later produced by Dr. A. G. Bragg and by the Lyon Manufacturing Company. The right to manufacture was passed to the partnership of Demas Barnes and Co. in New York, the largest patent medicine depot in the country, and to John D. Park in Cincinnati. "For the Outward Ailments of Man or Beast," Mexican Mustang Liniment claimed to cure over 30 ailments. The main ingredient was rather startling: the Liniment appears to have been mostly crude petroleum oil.

(Lettersheet) Postrider on Galloping Horse, wonderful early lithograph illustration on 1834 lettersheet headed "State of Louisiana, Parish of East Baton Rouge", with signed testament of widow that will discharge the duties of Testatrix to her minor children; some aging and ink erosion, Fine.

Lot 1127    

(Lettersheet) St. Louis From the River, large riverfront view illustration showing numerous riverboats on the Mississippi river, with hand inscribed captions including "McDowel Colege" (sic) at left, on lettersheet datelined "Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Mo., Jan 25th, 1862", 2¼ page letter with interesting content from soldier…This morning several of the Boys are talking of going down the River on the Gun Boats! There is a opportunity for all who wish to transfer to the gunboats, can do so, all who go on the Boats will be discharged about two years sooner than to stay in the Regiment, their wages will be 21$ pr month., also mentions the lettersheet illustration…The Dome with the flag on, in the distance is the McDowel Colege where Rebel prisoners are., Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The McDowell Medical College building became Gratiot Street Prison in December 1861. Generally, Gratiot Street Prison served as a holding place for prisoners until they could be transferred to larger facilities. Gratiot was unique because it held not only Confederate prisoners of war, but also Southern sympathizers, political prisoners, mail runners, bridge burners, and even Union deserters.

(Liquor) Edmund G. Booz, Importer of Brandies, Gins, Wines & C., Philad'a, blue cameo corner card on cover to Bristol, Pa., franked with well centered 1861, 3¢ rose, grid canceled with matching "Philadelphia, Pa., Dec 23, 1861" cds alongside, Very Fine and choice, the original "Booze" cover.

Edmund G. Booz was a major U.S. importer of liquor into the United States. As a result, his last name (including a new final "e") became synonymous with the products he sold.
