1912, 1¢ black essay, approved engravers model of engraved incomplete of entire design, retouched in black ink, and mounted on thick gray cardboard, signed "Approved July 17/11 Frank H. Hitchcock" by Postmaster General Frank H. Hitchcock (in office March 1909 to March 1912), Very Fine and unique.

Lot 2029 S   

1912, 1¢ green, Portugal "Colonias", purple diagonal handstamp, affixed to small piece, slightly toned, Very Fine.

Specimen stamps were provided by the U.S. Post Office to members of the UPU. Portuguese Empire Postal Administration stamped the 1912 issue Colonias.

Lot 2030    

1¢ green, "Shanghai, China" Darrah Type II Overprint, well centered, bright and fresh, o.g., hinge remnant, Very Fine and scarce.
Scott No. 405 var.    Estimate $200 - 300.

The unauthorized "Shanghai, China" overprints were made in December 1913 by Shanghai Postal Agent John Darrah. Unauthorized, they were removed from sale one week later by Postmaster General order.

1¢ green, "Due Cents" Seattle Provisional Postage Due, block of six, each with diagonal handstamp, natural s.e. at bottom, o.g., small hinge remnants, Very Fine, This is the only recorded block.

The Seattle Postmaster exhausted the supply of Postage Due stamps and overprinted 1¢ and 2¢ stamps with a handstamp.

1912, 1¢ green, imperf horizontally, vertical block of six, imperf horizontally between upper right vertical pair, folded over, torn and spliced during manufacture, Fine and rare.

EXCEPTIONALLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1¢ GREEN 1912-14 PERF 12 ISSUE VERTICAL PAIR IMPERF BETWEEN VARIETY.

We note only one other example of this variety, which is a pair certified by the Philatelic Foundation. We feel this is woefully undercatalogued by Scott.

1912, 1¢ green, 36 examples prepaying the 10¢ registry fee plus 26-times the first class letter rate, tied by "U.S.S. New Hampshire Sep 6, 1915" duplexes on large size registered cover to New York City, purple Brazilian Consulate in Mexico City return cachet, additional franked with Mexico 5-centavos, 50 examples with the overprint of the Mexican Provisional government; opened out for display, F.-V.F., This is the largest recorded multiple used on cover, it was mailed during the U.S. Occupation of Vera Cruz.

1912, 1¢ green, bottom guideline s.e., used with 10¢ parcel post (Q6), both tied by U.S. Postal Agency Shanghai Registry oval on cover to New Brunswick N.J., purple "Shanghai, China. (U.S. Postal Agency.) Registered Jan 30 1915" origin backststamp, purple Chicago (3.9) and New Brunswick N.J. (3.11) transit backstamps; cover has been opened fo display and backed, two opening tears on back, Very Fine appearance.
